HHIHS CyberPatriot Competition

By: Jake Heitman

In today's modern world, with all of the enhanced technology we have easy access to, nothing is more important than making sure our devices are technologically secure. Whether that be ensuring what we look up is private or making sure that all of our private data and information is kept secure. The CyberPatriot Competition ensures just that by teaching students the importance of cybersecurity in our modern world. Mr. Best, teacher here at HHIHS and advisor for the team who participates in the competition, tells us more about what exactly the competition is.

“The CyberPatriot Competition is a national youth cyber education program founded here in the United States. It's meant to help direct students toward careers in cybersecurity, computer science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.” Is what Mr. Best had to say when asked what the CyberPatriot Competition is.

When asked what a team does in the competition, Mr Best responded. “The competition challenges teams to find and fix cybersecurity vulnerabilities in virtual operating systems.

Teams are scored on how secure they make the system. Top teams advance through the online round of competition, and the best of the best advance to the in-person National Finals Competition, which will be held in Bethesda, Maryland on March 15-19, 2024 .”

When asked how and where competitions take place,  Mr. Best responded. “All rounds of competition, except for the National Finals Competition, take place online. Teams meet at and compete from any location, whether that be a classroom, computer lab, public library, or even at home.”

“Our team did incredible in our competition where we placed 3rd among numerous teams!’ said Mr. Best.

Overall, the CyberPatriot Competition has done nothing but provide HHIHS students and students around the world the ability to see what a career in cybersecurity looks like and potentially inspire them to pursue a career in it.

National Honors Society Gives Back to HHIHS Through Math Tutoring Program

By: Mia Heitman

Hilton Head Island High School has several honor societies including Math NHS. The group does many things to benefit the school, such as encourage school spirit, contribute to the community through service, and promote leadership. Math NHS is giving back to the school through a math tutoring program.

Mrs. Taylor, the head of the program, speaks on the basics of what the program is and how it works. The Math NHS Tutoring program helps students by letting them come in for tutoring sessions held by students. Mrs. Taylor says, “While I supervise the Mu Alpha Theta tutoring sessions, all of the math help is given by members of Mu Alpha Theta.” Students who are part of the Mu Alpha Theta program teach math to anyone who may need a little help with their homework or anyone looking for a full-on study session. To be a teacher, or a participant or the Math National Honors Society, students must have taken at least three high school level math classes and have at least a B average in them.

Math NHS tutoring is held after school on Thursdays from 3:30-4:15 in room A124. Algebra 1 and 2 are the group’s areas of expertise, but they can help with all types of math. The NHS math group goes beyond just helping the school. “Members also tutor students at the Neighborhood Outreach Community during the week.”

Sessions usually range from about 4-5 students, but the program is especially busy during exam week.  Anyone can drop by and there is no need to schedule in advance. The tutoring is also free as well as being held in school. More students should take advantage of the Math NHS Tutoring Program.,

Tech National Honors Society

By: Ashton Johnson

National Tech Honor Society (NTHS) exists to honor, recognize, and empower students and teachers in Career & Technical Education. NTHS provides close to $300,000 in scholarships annually, and strives to help connect education and industry to build a highly skilled workforce. Here at Hilton Head Island High School, teacher of the year, Mr. Best, is in charge of NTHS. Wyatt Norman, a new member of NTHS will answer questions we had about NTHS.

“Joining NTHS not only helps with scholarships, but it also help students position themselves ahead of competition in today’s highly competitive workforce and earn recognition for superior achievement in career and technical fields,” Wyatt stated.

“Right now, there are more jobs available than ever before that require knowledge of CTE (Career and Technical Education) courses. These jobs offer great pay and great opportunities to grow and gain knowledge on the subject.” Says Wyatt about why it is important to take CTE classes.

Of course, joining NTHS will also greatly increase your chances of getting accepted into universities as “Colleges today value CTE students very highly as there are so many careers today that require knowledge on the topic,” said Wyatt

Fields of Faith 2023

By: Lucy Morales

Fields of Faith is a student-led event hosted by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). This event is meant to bring the local community and students together.

Fields of Faith will be held on Wednesday, October 25th, 2023 from 6:30-8:00 p.m at the Hilton Head Christian Academy football stadium.

All are welcome to join this event. Ms. Emerick, the FCA Advisor at Hilton Head Island High School, states, “the purpose of this event is for students to share their faith and challenges to each other and to apply the Bible as the game plan for their life.”

This event happens once a year, usually in the fall. Locations are rotated. Ms. Emerick emphasizes, “Fields of Faith will have food and music. Students, usually senior athletes, will share their stories about their lives.”

This year, Grace Boyden, a Senior Girls Varsity Volleyball player at Hilton Head Island High School, will go up on the field and speak. Grace states, “I asked Mrs. Emerick if she could suggest that I speak because I have gone to Fields of Faith since my freshman year and I finally worked up the courage to give a testimony this year.”

Grace emphasizes, “I'm excited! I think I'm going to be nervous when the day comes, but I'm excited right now.”

Fields of Faith is a Nationwide event. Many schools across the country participate in this event. It is a great way for others to make friends with people that share the same interests. Hilton Head Island High School’s FCA is proud to play a big role in this event.
