Mrs. Diamond is one of the many incredible guidance counselors at Hilton Head Island High School. Mrs. Diamond assists students with the last names L-Q. Mrs. Diamond has been a guidance counselor for three years at HHIHS.
She wanted to go into guidance counseling because “I really liked psychology and helping people; being a school counselor, you get the best of both worlds. I get to be a helper and I get to work with kids, but you know I can also have a lot of moody kids when it comes to guidance”.
The Beaufort County School District counselors collaborated on the Virtual Calming Room, an app on the BCSD website. Mrs. Benton and Mrs. Diamond helped with the Virtual Calming Room project from HHIHS. This is where students who are feeling stressed out or need to take their mind off something may go and find live animal cams, games, coloring games, peaceful meditation music, yoga videos, and much more.
Mrs. Diamond says her favorite thing on the virtual calming room is the “live animal cams, when I have students in my office, if there upset I will pull up the animal cam because you cannot be upset when you are looking at puppies.”
Mrs. Diamond received her master’s degree at Salem College, which is in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She also has a bachelor’s degree in Psychology.
As we know, COVID-19 has affected many mentally and physically; when feeling stressed out, it is always good to talk to someone about it.
Something Mrs. Diamond recommends is “talk to people whether it is your parents or friends it is never good to hold it in. Some like to write their feelings down in a journal, prioritize things that are making you feel overwhelmed, like if you feel like you are getting loaded with schoolwork making a to-do list always helps. If it is more generalized stress, like you can't pinpoint it, you can go for a walk, ride bikes, do yoga, meditate, or workout. If you are feeling intense anxiety maybe try some breathing exercises or the calm app, I always use the Calm app. On the Calm app there are all different kinds of meditation and breathing exercises.”
Mrs. Diamond lastly recommends “it is very important to make sure you are getting enough rest and sleep at night because if not, you will feel more stress."
