Psychology at HHIHS

By: Patrick Balfour

Psychology is the study of the mind, brain and behavior. It has multiple aspects which involve behavior, knowledge, and emotions. With each having a very important role which helps with understanding human behavior and the mental processes that drive it. Psychology is also understanding what makes everyone's choices, mental health, and awareness.

Knowledge and the understating of the brain is a key part in psychology. “Knowledge is the ability to take care of yourself and others… and to change and adapt as you evolve and get order.”Ms. Weitekamper said. Different people may have different types and levels of knowledge, people can be knowledgeable in different ways.

Another key part in psychology is behavior. “Behavior is who you want to be and who you portray as…Behavior is stimulus which leads to an action which leads to a reaction.” Behavior  is influenced by “conscious, unconscious, subconscious” processes. Consciousness is responding to one’s surroundings, unconscious is not responding to one’s own consciousness which affects behavior and emotions, and subconscious is one that is not fully aware but which influences one's actions and feelings. Behavior is also affected by Mental health and awareness. Mental health is an individual's well-being in relation to their behaviors and mental awareness is the effort to reduce the stigma around mental illness and mental health conditions by sharing our personal experiences. This can be done by social interactions or by a trained professional (like a therapist).

The final part in psychology is emotion. “Emotions are coping mechanisms. It's your body's biological way of dealing with how you feel and how you react to different situations.” Everyone's emotions are different and can vary what can affect them. Emotions can happen from events, reactions, or social interactions. “Emotions Are your body's way of finding balance (homeostasis). Emotions are a way of adjusting and adapting to various situations. If a situation changes, the person's emotions change; which can affect their mood.

Overall, Psychology is the study of the mind, brain and behavior. Psychology is also about learning how to adjust and adapt to various situations, and how to find balance and well-being in our lives. The class can be taken as an elective class for 1 semester. If students wish to take this class, they should see their school counselor. For more questions, see Ms Weitekamper in room B 114.  By understanding mental health, mental awareness, behavior, knowledge, and emotions, we can gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and others.

Geometry Dash

By: Deja Godsun

Mrs. Scharfenberg said, “Geometry is an in depth study of basic geometric terms, two dimensional and three dimensional figures with the associated properties postulates, theorems, proofs, problems, and projects.” Geometry is a math that most students at HHIHS will typically take their junior year, as an honors or college prep class. A lot of students struggle with proofs. Proofs are given statements that prove a mathematical concept is true. Mrs.Scharfenberg said, “Some of the kids tune off when we do proofs, they just don't like them. I try my best to make it clear to them, most eventually get them.”

There are different shapes that go into geometry. “We do a lot of different kinds of things, like it's not your typical Xs and Ys and solving equations. We do three dimensional figures, we do circles, we do proofs, we do triangles, and transformations.”

In conclusionGeometry is a frustrating subject for some. Mrs. Scharfenberg helps her students by giving guided notes and some packets for practice. To encourage students she said,

“You won't know something unless you continue to do it.”

School tutoring for math with Ms.Taylor

By: Kendall Montes Corella

HHIHS allows students who need help with certain classes to have a chance to seek extra work from teachers. Ms.Taylor and the math honor society is in charge of the math school tutoring. “Students may come after school or 4th block SLT on thursdays”

Coming into this new generation, a lot of students struggle with staying focused in class and can’t show their academic strengths just due to the fact that they can't do work during class. Having after school tutoring is such a great way to go out and help students who struggle, help them make up for what they are capable of.

Putting the IB in IB sports

by: Tristen Simmons

For the athletes at Hilton Head Island High School. IB Sports can help the students to understand the mechanics in the sport furthermore. The class also offers what is good or bad for your body in order to keep it healthy for the sport you are in. Ms.Mazur teaches the IB Sports program at the school. She can help to better understand how the “body works, and how it leads to a better performance in things like sport.” It incorporates the traditional disciplines of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, psychology and nutrition. These key factors in the body are studied in the context of sport, exercise and health. In relation it will help you to learn how the body works and how to apply it to a sport. For example when you play basketball “you place your non-dominant hand on the side of the ball”, in this class you will learn it is there for a guide and will lead to better shooting. This program offers a head start into the sports and medicine field. Here are questions Ms. Mazur wants you to ask yourself to determine if you want to take this course. One being “how can I get better at my sport, how can I know more about my body, or even how can I use science to evaluate performance.” She informs her students on how IB Sports will lead you with “great background knowledge when going to study at a higher academic level.” To sum it up, you will know more about yourself and the human body, and what to do in a situation in your field of sports.
