HHIHS Brings New Club During the Pandemic

by Thomas Figueroa Hobler
Hilton Head Island High School has brought a new club to the school: chess club. The founder of the chess club is Mr. Stine.
He says, “Chess club offers students who are interested in the game to meet with and compete against other students. We meet every Tuesday after school in room A116. Meetings usually last until about 5 PM. Students play against each other, and also work on their chess problem-solving skills by using chess.com.”
Chess has many benefits according to Mr. Stine. He says, “chess has many well documented positives. It helps with problem-solving and critical thinking, and has been correlated with improved math and science performance. In fact, many schools offer chess as an elective class because of its popularity and its benefits.”
Also the number of people playing chess has increased according to Mr. Stine, "so far, we have had small turnouts for the after school meetings (largely due to sports and after school jobs), but a growing number of students are playing during lunch or whenever some time is available during the day. I am hoping that eventually the club attendance will grow as well.”
Chess offers many benefits to students and HHIHS is hopeful for the growth of the club in the future.
