Cooking Class

By: Samanta Garcia

Culinary Arts known to students as cooking class, is a class where you learn food preparation, cooking, and food presentation. Hilton Head Island High School gives this class as an option for students to pick. Culinary student Allyson Leyva will discuss how culinary helps her and how it works.

“I chose to take culinary because I didn’t know how to cook and the school provided a class to learn so I took it,” she said. Allyson decided to take a great opportunity to learn and how to become better at cooking with the course that the school offers. Which is an essential in life Hilton Head  Island High School Culinary Room

Although the school year just started she states that she has already learned, “ Yeah I’ve already learned a lot and it’s only been a month.” Of course culinary seems fun, but she said.” When we cook it is, I don’t like the background of the cooking, like cleaning.”

She recommends others to take the class, it is beneficial if you want to learn or extend your knowledge of cooking.

“ In some aspects not like the paper part of it,” she said. Allyson is saying that some parts of the class are easy but not the paper notes part. The test she takes or the notes she has to take before even being allowed to cook, they have to do a lot to even start cooking.

Culinary can be dangerous if you are using knives, fire and more. Some rules are, “ when there's a grease fire you don’t put water on, you put baking soda, always wash your hands, keep the handle of the pan away from the walking area so it doesn’t fall,” she said.

Allyson took culinary so she could learn more about cooking, she never considered herself a bad cook but she isn’t the best either. She highly recommends this class and she says that it is fun. They cook variations of foods from chicken fried rice to pastries like gooey chocolate chip cookies. You can learn a lot from culinary not only cooking, but maybe even some etiquette in the kitchen. Hilton Head Island High School is lucky to have a great chef to teach these kids and culinary is one of the most fun and popular classes to take in Hilton Head Island High School.

Yearbook Cover

By:Jada Green

Yearbook Production is a class here at The Nest. Lots of students here enjoy taking this class and having  a say about the designs of the yearbook. For this school year, Mrs.Schoelkopf and her yearbook class chose the cover to be “From Every Angle”.

There are lots of steps you have to take to create a yearbook, but the first step is the cover. There was a combined effort of 4-5 people that helped come up with the design. For example, Mrs.Schoelkopf states “Junior: Daniela Celis was the person to capture the picture of the mascot, Junior: Kaitlyn Sobocinski helped with creative decisions, and then our yearbook representative from Jostens helped with creative decisions also.”.

Another process the class goes through to come up with the design. Mrs.Schoelkopf states “ Returning students from previous years come up with themes, then we choose a theme to have for the cover and throughout the book itself. The cover and then the dividers all have to speak to ‘From Every Angle’”.

The cover title “From every Angle” has to coordinate with every part of the book. Mrs.Schoelkopf states “The theme carries through the dividers like summer, fall, spring, winter, seniors like every area of the book.

And with every book there is a huge meaning being the cover. For this cover Mrs.Schoelkopf “From every angle it has to do with people's perspective, so the angle of fall, spring, seniors. It has to be broad to be able to cover everything. You can’t have seniors on the front but have the title be ‘From Every Angle’ because that's not all about the seniors.”

When designing a yearbook you will have your favorite parts to design. Mrs.Schoelkopf states “ My favorite part will have to be finding the right image and design.” Being a part of a yearbook is very stressful but can be very fun and easy at times to be a part of.

HHIHS mathematics

By: Edgar Zavala

Here at HHIHS they have different classes, like math, reading, science and history. Many students love different classes, everyone mostly struggles with math because there is so much information that you have to learn. Here at HHIHS there is a student that loves math. His name is Alex.

Math is his favorite subject in school. He loves to study math in his free time because it means a lot to him “ Mathematics is of great significance to me. I perceive math as a precious asset to help me understand the world around me. Unfortunately. Many people fail to view math the same way I do.”

Math should be taken by everyone,  including students because math is everywhere and it is  important to learn because in most jobs you need it. Alex stated   “I believe everyone should learn math, even for your future career or profession. Even if it  does not involve a strong understanding of math, it's  useful for performing everyday tasks such as cooking, budgeting time management and fitness.”

Math is one of the most important subjects in school because it's needed in your everyday life “ Of course math is important without it there would be no scientific understanding, due to the fact math is the foundation to physics, chemistry  and biology. That's just one reason I could think of. I’m sure there are many more significant factors.”

Math can be used everywhere, it depends on what you do for example in  construction you will need it because I will use math when I start a construction business, and  “ I strongly advise you to take an advanced math class especially if you want to be in the construction industry and have the ability to analyze issues. In fact, depending on the position within the construction industry, I think it would be beneficial to take physics.”

Math is very important to HHIHS and in the real world. Many students love math here at HHIHS.

What is the Theory of Knowledge?

By: Ellie Mastrorocco

The Theory of Knowledge, more commonly known as TOK, is a class dedicated to IB Diploma students trying to discover how we know what we know, why we know what we know, and what we know and do not know. It is a class that helps students delve deeper into certain topics using critical thinking.

TOK is a higher level (HL) class that is required to complete the IB Diploma Program to ensure students develop an elevated understanding of the world around them and an exceptional ability to think analytically. In the first year of TOK, Diploma candidates discuss and study the areas of knowledge and certain TOK concepts that will help them set up their exhibition (the final project for HL-1) that ultimately helps them prepare for their Extended Essay that will be written in HL-2. This class allows students to extend their knowledge and thinking because it requires them to elaborate on every idea they have and why they think that way. It eventually becomes a habit to think critically about any topic.

IBDP candidates in HL-2, agree that TOK is one of the best classes our school can offer. Being able to explain why we think a certain way without a definite answer is a new and exciting opportunity for schools. Students explain that a challenging aspect of the class is making sure they are using enough TOK language, concepts, and criteria in their work, but this is something that anyone can take on. If you’re a rising junior, consider the Diploma Program.

Math Tutoring

By: Jada Green

HHIHS is now offering math tutoring for any and all students needing any extra help with any math subject here. Math tutoring will begin September 22nd. These tutoring sessions are free and will be held in the media center.

If you don’t know, Mrs.Taylor is in charge of the math tutoring. She is also one of our Discrete and Geometry Cp math teachers here at The Nest. So she knows a thing or two about math and how to do a great job in that subject.

Everyone has their own definition of math tutoring. For example, Mrs.Taylor states “math tutoring is done by students who are in upper levels of math and are members of Math Honor Society and so every Thursday they are here to help others with their homework and test preparations.”

As stated before math tutoring is for all students, and Mrs.Taylor states “ When you come to math tutoring we see what you will need help with and you will assigned to a tutor you will be comfortable with and they will help you with your big ideas, homework, and content masteries.”

Math tutoring is held every Thursday from 3:30-4:15. Also, Mr.Willard is always tutoring in the mornings in his classroom.

If you are still a little confused on why math tutoring is important here is what Mrs.Taylor thinks” It’s important because a student can learn something from someone close to their age explaining it and teaching it a different way than teachers do and we strongly believe it is helpful in the end.”
