New Varsity Sport: Boys Volleyball

by: Elizabeth Monzon

I had the opportunity to talk to the coach who started boys volleyball at Hilton Head High School. Mr. Talarczyk also known as Coach T started boys volleyball last year in spring of 2022, he is liked by all his students and team. I interviewed Coach T,  Nahuel Ibanez, and Kendall Montes.

When I spoke to Coach T he said “ I played club volleyball because we didn’t have a varsity team at Western Michigan.” He first started playing intramurals for a guys' team and then he moved to CO-ED. I then followed with why he wanted to be a volleyball coach at the school and he followed with “18 years ago Chris Gray was the head coach, and I walked down to see the volleyball program and I knew I wanted to be a part of the team.” Coach T also loves volleyball. We know the girls volleyball team is undefeated, but now that we have boys Coach T is very excited that everything is getting started up. The boys schedules are three home and three away region matches, as well as one tri-match against Battery Creek at Beaufort. Coach is expecting growth and more awareness for the upcoming seasons/years. The Seahawks should come out and support the boys volleyball as well as the community.

When I spoke to Kendall Montes I asked how he was feeling about this year with being apart of the new team he said “I’m feeling great, because there are a lot of new boys this year and we’ve been putting in the effort and hustle every week and it's been a good week so far.” As we know there are many positions in volleyball but Kendall plays left back outside. Kendall said “I really enjoy it and I'm really looking forward to it.” Not all teams are perfect, every team needs their improvements but kendall only said “we need to work harder and need to put more hustle into the sport.” Personally I’m very excited to see how Kendall will be playing and how much effort he will put in.

Interviewing Nahuel started off very strong by him saying “I’m very confident we are going to beat the other teams!”  Nahuel is a senior this year and he has a lot of excitement for the sport just by the way he talks. I asked him what made him want to join, he followed with “I used to watch a lot of anime and Haikyuu!!, as well as watching youtube videos about volleyball.” Nahuel is a setter for the team and I don’t know much about volleyball so I wanted him to go into more detail, he explained that “a setter gets the first serve/hit of the ball in the game” Nahuel does see himself playing outside of school, not just for college.

The Seahawks  and community should come out and support the boys on September 15 at 6:30pm. We should all show the other team what school spirit looks like.

Tennis aims for success

By: Karina Santiago

The HHIHS Tennis Team this year is looking forward to making the team successful and to carry as many wins as possible. After school they practice on different types of things to make sure they’re ready for their games against other school teams. A big goal for them is to make it to state championships and bring the exciting news back to the nest. This week on Tuesday they played against Lucy Beckham and won 5-1.

Yosadara Nava, a sophomore who plays for the tennis team, said that “the team practices 3 times a week; Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.”

She joined the tennis team because she mentioned “it is fun and it’s a great way for her to make new friends to be able to open up more.”

On the days she stays after school for practice they exercise on their serves, run, apply more skills and in general play tennis.

Her and the team's aim is to make it to the state championships and beat Lucy Beckham. Her goals to make the team successful is “being there for each other and encouraging one another.”

Bridge Bowl

by: Kimberly Valladares

We are talking about the Bridge Bowl game and how this is an important game against our rival Bluffton. I think we have gotten better this year and we have been more focused this school year. I wanted to see Shaikh's point of view. Shaikh said “This game is important because Bluffton is our rival and yeah.” I think Shaikh’s point of view is a very good point.

This year we really wanted to bring our spirit and choose a good theme. Shaikh said “Our student theme is Hawaiian or island wear.” I think our theme is a good choice for the Bridge Bowl game.

The students have a rival and it’s Bluffton and I wanted to see how the rival has affected us in our school year. Shaikh said “Students feel good about playing against Bluffton. It's gonna be nice to see some faces that other people know and yeah that’s it.” Shaikh has told us how he has been feeling about playing against Bluffton and how it’s going to be nice playing to see new faces and how they play this school year.

They unfortunately moved the Bridge Bowl game on Wednesday instead of having it Friday because of Hurricane Ian and how the tropical storm has been affecting us. Shaikh said “Since we recently had a bi-week it gave us more time to prepare for this game and Bluffton only had about 3 days off to prepare because they had a game on Friday and we didn’t so yeah.” I think that was interesting because it gave us more time but Bluffton didn’t have enough time to prepare and maybe they needed some more days off.

How do football players prepare for a football game like they do anything in particular. Shaikh said “Music, music gets your energy going, gets your mindset right and yeah.” So that's how you prepare for a football game and listen to music. Music gets you hyped and in the game.
