Open Mic Night

By: Julia Duncan

When Ms. Guinn started teaching at HHIHS she continued the open mic night events that were already in place for years before she came to Hilton Head Island High School. Ms. Guinn thought it would be a fun idea to continue the open mic night traditions at HHIHS. During COVID, the open mic night events were put on pause because of the close contact policies for the school, but open mic night started again towards the end of last year. Last year's restart of open mic night was successful, and HHIHS is starting it up again this year. At open mic night there are usually between 30-40 people in attendance. This group includes people from the high school, past graduating classes, and even kids from the middle school. The most popular performances at open mic night are lip syncing or singing performances. Another one of the more common performances is scenes and monologues from plays. Ms. Guinn plans to do the open mic night events each month, and has already scheduled each one all the way until December.

HHIHS Traditions

By: Elizabeth Monzon

HHIHS is very big on traditions such as: Pep rallies, Homecoming, Coming Home, and many more.

Mr. Schidrich's favorite tradition is “pep rallies, homecoming, and seniors painting their parking spot.” Due to COVID-19 HHIHS could not have all these great traditions. Mr. Schidrich is happy that they have returned. Pep rallies play a big part in school spirit especially the games, or everyone trying to figure out which grade has the most spirit; but the one thing that makes Mr. Schidrich happy is "to see everyone bonding and having a great time."

Lia Piccioli is a junior this year at HHIHS. A tradition she would like to see is "dressing up for holidays and decorating the school for the holidays to bring more spirit.”

Sports play a big part in schools. Mr. Scalise is one of the coaches at HHIHS. His favorite tradition that is connected to sports is the “faculty vs different sport teams for charity,” which was done six years ago for softball. Another tradition he would like to see again is "the walk of champions," which is when sports teams walk through the hallways and the students cheer them on. This tradition did return in October as the Seahawks sent the swim team off to States!

All schools have different traditions, but the Seahawks do it best.

Senior Parking Spot Painting Returns Again

by: Lia Piccoli

Senior Seahawks are painting their parking spots! On Wednesday, September 7 from 4:00 to 8:00 and Sunday, September 11, 1:00 to 5:00. Bringing paint rollers, brushes, trays, painters’ tape, stencils, trash bags, rulers and any other painting supplies you think you may need. Bringing family and friends to show are Seahawks creativity and arts.

“I’m excited to see everyone's parking spots and excited to start painting,” said by Ben Sampson. This is a great way for Seahawks to express their creativity. “I’m looking forward to all of the different varieties of paintings” said by Julia Duncan. In Mr. Schidrich’s weekly email he said, “Save money by Talking to friends about what colors they are using, and then purchasing paint together”. Come to the Nest to see your favorite seniors, parking spots.

School Spirit and student sections

by: Elizabeth Monzon

WE GOT SPIRIT YES WE DO,  WE GOT SPIRIT, HOW ABOUT YOU?

This year at HHIHS we are welcoming back Pep rallies, Sporting events, and School spirit without having to worry about COVID-19. The Seahawks are back and better than ever, our spirit and the student section are getting louder than ever.

Camden Bernstein is a Cheerleader at the school. When I spoke to her I asked who had more spirit, the teachers or the students and she said “it's 50/50, somedays teachers will have more spirit and students can have a ton more.” Recently our student section has been lacking on the students, We are only seeing Seniors or Juniors. One idea Camden thought of to bring more people is “Doing a contest or getting the students involved during Half-time.”

As everyone knows pep rallies are very big in schools but people are expecting more. I spoke to Lily Bigger and I wanted to see what a student was expecting out of pep rallies this year and she said, “I want to see more excitement and more teachers participating during the pep rallies.” When the students vs teachers basketball tournament went on, a lot of students loved participating in it and cheering who they wanted to win. This year it would be nice to see more teachers taking part in the activities.

Spirit sticks are also playing a big part this year. The first grade to win were the juniors, but it can always change depending if another grade level has more spirit or if the other grade level is on their best behavior. I spoke to Alandria Kennedy  and Nahuel Ibanez and they think “the seniors deserve the spirit stick because we are showing more spirit and class of 2023 haven’t gotten it so far.” Although the seniors have been losing spirit this year, they think they deserve it more.

Holly Heiens used to be a cheerleader at the school but last year she wanted to be a part of the student section family. I asked why she goes to the football games, some show support and others go to see friends but Holly says “I go for the student section but I love showing my support to the Seahawks.” Seahawks love to dress up for games and Holly told me why she liked it, she said “I like it because everyone gets to express their school spirit and come together as a student body.”

As I said, students love to dress up for games but it's not easy all the time. Ms. Spisz is the journalism teacher and she films for football, I had the chance to speak to her and she said “Ms. Lee and SGA come up with themes for football.” Which can’t be easy because not everyone will be happy and we want everyone to be happy and enjoy themselves. For other sporting events the teams or coaches pick out what they would like to see that night. We are very lucky to have  people figure out what the theme should be and how to bring more spirit.

Lia Piccioli is a junior at HHIHS and she has some new ideas for themes. One was a Blue Out because she says “It would be our chance to show our spirit through our outfits and colors, which could be very exciting.” It should be very exciting and there are many more ideas that will come up.

Gaming at the Nest: New E-Sports Team By: Norma Velez

HHIHS is starting an ESPORTS team this school year! At Hilton Head Island High School, Mrs. Collier is the instructor/advisor who monitors the ESPORTS club.

Some of the main games that will be played by the club are popular games. Ms. Collier states, “Some of the games that are played are League of Legends, Hearthstone, Valorant, Overwatch 2, Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Multivurses, Fortnight and Rocket League. These are kind of big time competition games and they are very popular. The most popular games are Valorant, Overwatch, Super Smash Bros, and Rocket League.”

“Members can sign up by joining the google classroom. The classroom code has been posted onto flyers around the hallway. They have to fill out some forms for me and submit a trial video,” Ms. Collier states. Any student in Hilton Head Island High School can join regardless of grade level.

Ms. Collier states, “members will be competing and practicing games. We will do a lot of practice in house or within the team. When we go to competitions, that's when we will be playing against high schools across the country. They’ll put us in a queue and get matched for the games to start.” Being able to play games, practice, and compete with others in school sounds like a lot of fun.

Ms. Collier continues, “the goal is to not only get people together who have the same interests but also to really promote ESPORTS as a legitimate sport. We come together and we practice competition and it does require skill and strategy. It’s a good positive thing to bring people together who can enjoy what they're doing and also meet people they wouldn’t normally meet. It’s been really fun so far, but ideally the purpose to bring everyone together and do something that they love, and hopefully win a lot of competitions.” Unlike other clubs, the ESPORTS club will be following the athletics eligibility guidelines.

The ESPORTS club at Hilton Head Island High School is a great opportunity for students to interact with other students, and share their interests about games that they like. HHIHS is excited to be the second high school in Beaufort County to have an ESPORTS team. Practices and competitions start soon!
