Happy Hispanic Heritage Month

by: Karina Santiago

It is officially Hispanic Heritage month! Hispanic Heritage month is a way to celebrate and represent Hispanic countries from around the world. It starts September 15 and ends on the 15th of October. The HHIHS Culture Club is hosting fun events for the school. President, Angie Hernandez and the vice president of the club, Juan Leyva are planning events for the students and staff part of the Hispanic community as well as the whole rest of the school to contribute and learn more about the cultures, traditions and diversities. Each member of the club has a role and helps both President and Vice President come up with ideas on when and how these events should be organized.

Angie stated that the culture club has plans of showing the differences and similarities between Hispanic countries. She also mentioned planning more events in the last two weeks of Hispanic Heritage Month. So far a bulletin board has been created.

Each individual member of the club has different roles. The president and vice president are both in charge but the president has more control while the vice president gives their opinion on the ideas mentioned. The members' jobs are to help plan and work out the events, but if she wants them to she tells them to help make posters to put around and together they solve it out and work as a group.

She would like to represent all Hispanic countries, “Personally I think it would be nice to represent more countries that are not really seen and when some people assume Hispanic they don’t really assume other countries just one country” she stated.

As a member of the culture club Angie stated that HHIHS gave them the opportunity to do this and personally she had to ask Mr. Schidrich about the Jerseys.. Sadly they got pushed back and were supposed to be tomorrow (September 16th). But I’m grateful that they gave me the opportunity to let that happen because they could’ve just said no completely.”

She explained that “there were lots of ideas that we had but we just didn’t have the budget to do it or fully didn’t have enough time. We were hoping that today or tomorrow we would have a DJ and some food, but again we simply didn’t have the budget.”
