Can You “Reed”?
By: Brody C.
One of the many classes that Hilton Head Island High school has available is the band class, taught by Mr.Pribanic. It is recommended that you have some prior knowledge and skill with playing an instrument if you decide to join. The reason for that is that if you join without any prior experience with playing an instrument, you will be very behind. You will have to be very dedicated and work very hard to catch up to your classmates. Most students who joined the band class were in the middle school band class as well. Yes, students with no prior experience have joined the band class before, but it was not easy for them.
The instruments that you can play in the band class are percussion instruments, brass instruments, and wood instruments. In the band class, you rehearse playing every day and prepare for upcoming events such as parades, pep rallies, and football games. They do a large variety of small events around the island, such as veteran’s day parades, Christmas parades, and concerts for some of the resorts, among other things. Individually, students learn how to play their instruments better, and how to better interpret/read music sheets. In conclusion, if you like to play or would like to play and are dedicated to playing a percussion, brass, or woodwind instrument, and are a student at HHIHS, then you should join the band class.
HHIHS is hosting “Night of the Arts! It is an event celebrating and bringing awareness to the arts and how important they are to the students of Hilton Head High.
Q:What is the Night of Arts? ?
The Arts Department: "The official title is “Fall Arts Extravaganza.” It is an evening celebrating and showcasing all involved in the Visual and Performing Arts Department. There will also be a featured performance from the Honor Choir from Hilton Head Elementary School for Creative Arts. In the Lobby of the Seahawk Cultural Center and the Art Gallery will be the Fall Visual Art Exhibit where visual art students will have their art pieces displayed. In the auditorium will be performances by the performing art classes (Band, Orchestra, Theatre, Dance, and Choir). Is there any better way to celebrate our talented students than by having one large event showcasing everyone?!"
Q:Write your question?
The Arts Department: "The Arts Night was started in the Spring of 2019 as a way to:
Showcase all students involved in the Visual and Performing Arts Department
Broaden the audiences for the visual art students performing arts groups (Band, Choir, Orchestra, Theatre, and Dance)
serve as a potential recruitment tool for all programs.
There was a “Music in our Schools” and “Youth In Art” celebration in March of 2020 which served as a “teaser” for the Spring 2020 Arts Extravaganza – but for obvious reasons the 2020 event didn’t happen. It is our goal for this event to happen each semester – we are already planning the Spring Arts Extravaganza."
Q:Who are some of the students who have gone above and beyond for this event?
The Arts Department: "All students have gone above and beyond in preparation for this event. They’ve spent countless hours in their respective classes honing their skills and practicing their craft. All students have also spent about as much time outside of the classroom painting, drawing, building, playing instruments, singing, practicing a monologue – in preparation as they do inside the classroom."
Q: When is it?
The Arts Department: "Tuesday, December 7 at 7pm"

Boo! Fright School at HHIHS
By: Emeli Perez
Hilton Head Island High School hosted a haunted house called Fright School from October 28-30th and it was held 6-10 pm. The haunted house was planned by Ms. Guinn, Ms. Reagan, Ms. Stroud, and Ms. Bode, and the students that have volunteered to help out.
The haunted house was like “a school tour,” said Ms. Guinn. The haunted house began in the Aux Lot, went through the SCC, made its way down D-hall, and out the front of the school.
Ms. Guinn said, “you came in to see if Fright School was the right fit for you. You visited all the different classes in the school to see what happens at Fright School.”
Visitors were able to purchase tickets from the bookkeeper, online, or paid in person with cash. Ms. Guinn said, “we only allowed friend groups with a maximum of six people per group. We had hand sanitizer throughout the haunted house. We sprayed down touchpoints between groups. We also kept distance between the visitors being scared and the actors.” This is how the haunted house followed Covid-19 guidelines.
The haunted house was a major success and the first time a haunted house was put on at the school. HHIHS students and staff are hoping for a return of a haunted house next year.
The Memory Project
By: Hannah Dye, Martha Cordero, and Leah Jackson
The Memory Project was created in 2004 by Ben Schumaker who was a student at the University of Wisconsin. Ms. Dobbelaere’s art painting class is taking part in this project. Ms. Dobbelaere spoke about the purpose and meaning behind this project. She said “it's a global arts initiative where high school students across our nation create portraits and works of art for children in challenging situations around the globe.”
The goal of this project is to use art to create a kinder world and international friendships. Ms. Dobbelaere spoke a little about the message behind this project. She said, “the children who these portraits go to young adults are usually from worn torn countries or orphanages or some type of challenging situation where they don’t have pictures of themselves from when they were younger. That's why Ben started the project, so its something very special to them and hopefully it spreads kindness."
HHIHS Little Women
By: Stella Piccioli, Lola Gallagher, and Caleb Bison
Ms. Kimberly Guinn is the theatre director for Hilton Head Island Stage Company. Ms. Guinn put together the musical Little Women with students at HHIHS. Her students influenced her to produce Little Women due to their liking of the music and the book. Little Woman is a story about the four March sisters: Jo, Amy, Beth, and Meg. This musical is about their coming-of-age story where they go through “trials and tribulations”. They find love, and they grow into mature young women along the way.
Ms. Guinn wanted to expand the cast from its traditional smaller show, and it now has 21 actors and a large tech group involved in the production. The lead actors are Laney Hawkins who plays Jo, Coulson Geltz who plays Lourie, Megan Berger who plays Beth, Channing Coulter who plays Amy, and Laurel Hawkins who plays Meg. The play was on November 4th-7th of 2021. Ms. Guinn hopes that people enjoyed the show with friends and family, and appreciated the story and literature behind it.
