Math Tutoring is Back!

By: Lucky Johnson

    How are the hours?

A thing that a lot of students are struggling with in school is math and for some people math is not at all an easy subject and for lots of people they struggle with it. Well that's where math tutoring comes in. One of the math teachers answered this by saying the hours are good and their after school with Ms. Taylor on Thursdays and is student help student, which means students help other students. In the morning Mr .Willard is from 7:15 to 8:15 and on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.     What type of math do they help with?

Math tutoring helps with all types of math. Some examples might be algebra 1 and 2, geometry , discrete , calculus, and pre-calc.,so basically any type of math you might need help with. But if you really can't find anyone who understands you can always ask your teacher for help.

Are There certain teachers that are better in certain subjects?

If you are looking for teachers that are better at certain subject you should look for the teachers that are better at the higher level math subject because those teachers know it all and one example of one of those teacher might be Mr. Willard, because he teaches upper level math, and that would be a good recommendation if you need help in one of those higher level math subjects. Also the juniors or seniors that are helping could help you with what you might need to do, but it is still better to ask your own math teacher for help on what's troubling you.

How long is after school tutoring?

If you're looking for after school tutoring you have to go from 3:30 to 4:15 on Thursdays.

Math National Honor Society, also known as Math NHS or Mu Alpha Theta, is a program where students can showcase their outstanding mathematical skills and achievements and receive academic help regarding math. At  Hilton Head Island High School, a math honor society is made public for all students to attend as long as they have completed the requirements during their High School career. The club is well respected and speaks to many students academic success, involvement with the community, and leadership skills.

Ms. Taylor states, “The requirements for Mu Alpha Theta, which is Math Honor Society, is three math credits, a B average in overall of all of your math courses.” The club can be joined by many students that have completed at least three math courses regardless of their academic year as it is known that students complete courses in different paces. All students have the opportunity to enroll and be given an equal opportunity.

Like any other club, the members are required to meet somewhere in school whether that is during lunch hours, or after school. “The members meet in my room. A meeting is usually held the last Thursday of every month,” said Ms. Taylor. However, despite there only being a meeting once a month, members are still active and ready to work ahead for their math courses to get the best results. In the meetings, members discuss any future plans regarding the club, and or they will communicate with each other regarding their current math courses if assistance is needed.

Students may be enrolled for Math NHS or they might also be enrolled in the after school tutoring that Ms. Taylor always gives. Ms. Taylor comments, “The big thing that we do after school here is tutoring students for math. We start tutoring during SLTs so we are here as a service club and we also have some math competitions that we do as well.”

Tutoring is beneficial for students of all grades that want extra help with their work or are interested in helping other students. The reason why other students are given the opportunity to help other students is because some students understand the concept after it is someone in a similar grade who explains things in a way they can understand. Every student understands things in different ways whether that be visual or verbal styles of learning.

“Students can see me for an application and they also need to get approval from their current math teacher to join,” said Ms. Taylor. With that being said, students can join at any time as long as their math course grade is a B average and the teacher also approves of the student joining math NHS. Ms. Taylor is the main teacher who runs the club; however, other teachers also participate in the club by informing their students about the club and how this club can possibly help them with any questions they might have or if they need any assistance with their math courses. She is always available to help students with any questions or concerns.

Fun Classroom Projects and assignments

by: Kimberly Valladares

I asked Ethan about how projects/assignments affected his learning. Ethan said “So right now what we are doing is we are doing something about Malala. We are also doing the hero’s journey like the stages we are on stage four but one of the activities I liked doing that was in the past unit was the mock trial and it’s basically kind of like a play. “ I think that doing group work or any type of group work activity is exciting.

I wanted to ask how he felt doing those types of activities because some people don’t like them so people do. Ethan said “I really like them. I just wish I could understood it more only because well I had one of the most crucial roles but I still didn’t kind of get it and when I did get it, like it was just kind of unfair on my part since I was the antagonist of the story.”

Sometimes when we do some activities we don’t get them but then we get to understand them later on into the story. What new activities would interest you. Ethan said “More group stuff like when we work together instead like of alone and yeah just more group stuff instead of being individual work.” I do agree with Ethan on this point because sometimes in classes it is required to do group work but it is better so we can get the perspective of other individuals.

I know that activities can be challenging to some and others. But some people understand activities quicker. Ethan said “Not so much but the essays have been challenging only cause I don’t really well in the past I didn’t really write that much essays so yeah mainly like the essays.” I also think that the essays would be challenging for me since I haven’t been writing essays I have been slacking with writing essays lately.

The last question was more getting into what topics and how has the class been so far. Ethan said “ So we done the crucible that was our last unit right now we are reading about Malala and just the hero’s journey like the stages that’s pretty much it.”

Seahawks E-Learn During Hurricane Ian

By: Karina Santiago

The week of September 26th Hurricane Ian made its way to the East Coast. According to weather reports it made its way to Florida, then to South Carolina, and even some parts of North Carolina. Its winds are reported to be 150 mph, which is a lot for a community to experience. Most districts in parts of South Carolina decided to go to e-learning for the safety of the students and staff. This is better because it prevents buses from getting into dangerous incidents on the roads. The Beaufort County School District decided to do both Thursday September 29th and Friday September 30th as a way to not make up days in December. All assignments were to be posted to Google Classroom and completed by students on the due dates given by their teachers. Many teachers even Zoomed with their students to give a sense of normalcy.

“E-learning is utilizing electronic technologies to access educational curriculum,” BCSD explained. It is based on the use of technology and the internet. This helps students with collaboration skills and digital skills.

Mr. Schidrich, the HHIHS principal, stated that all students will be marked virtually present until October 7th. Those students who do not complete their assignments by the end of that day will be marked absent. He stated in an email to parents that “By Friday October 7th, teachers will inform our attendance office of the students who DID NOT submit their assignments from tomorrow or Friday.”

"The same behavior that is expected at school is also expected to be given during virtual learning," he stated.

“If students do not have access to the internet at home they can submit help 'WebHelpDesk' tickets for technical support,” BCSD stated in a statement to families.

Mr. Schidrich also said that "schools will reopen Monday the 2nd of October." He advised that parents look at any recent announcements on their social media pages for any updates or changes.

The Seahawks successfully navigated virtual learning during Hurricane Ian. Students and staff were well prepared after using an e-learning format for two years, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. One positive aspect from the pandemic is the ability to do e-learning during storms so students do not have to make-up days during breaks.
