 Debate Club

By Angel Andreucetti

Debate club is the newest club at HHIHS, This is the first restart at HHIHS. Debate club is a club where you debate about everyday things, like global politics, sports, movies and more. Ms.Bode is the person in charge of this club, she is an English teacher and a Creative Writing teacher. Ms.Bode told the Seahawk Times that, “debate club was here before she was but in 2020 it went away. When she came to HHIHS she brought back the club and has been around for 2 years.” Debate club has been around the school for a number of years but due to the absence of teachers wanting to take charge of the club the club hasn’t been an option for people to stay after school and debate and cool things. Ms.Bode said “I’m trying to get Debate club into competitions in the near future.” She wants to go all over the state and compete with other schools. Ms.Bode stated “debate club helps with college resumes.” Colleges really care about what extracurricular things students do. Ms.Bode stated,”to join the debate club and to go to her room at B108.” Debate Club is a good club where you can get college recognition and make new friends.

Robotics at Hilton Head High

By: Patrick Balfour

The Robotics team camp is a club at HHIHS and other schools where students build and program robots. There is also a competition where they compete against other schools to win a certain game mode. The robots they use are “Vex-Robotics.” The type the robotics club uses is called Vex-E5 and Vex-EXP.

"We started the club at creative arts… The middle school has been invited to join this year [and] starting a club at the middle school next year. Robotics is done for this year's competition…  Now we get to decide what we want to do as a club. For me, I think it's more about building robots and coming up with a standard drivetrain this year… So when in May they release the upcoming competition they can convert the drivetrain into next year's competition.”-Mr. Best.

“Next year, one thing we will do is split it up into two days. Have a competition team day and a general day.”-Mr. Best.  The robotics club will focus on teaching newcomers the ropes of robotics and how to build, program, and code robots.  They will also teach more experienced students in robotics to create competition teams for the upcoming Vex Robotics Competition. Every year they change the game mode that the team has to play with. So when they release the game mode next year, they will have a better understanding of building the robots for that game mode.

This year it was Spin up. “Your goal is to get as many points as possible in a minute. The team with the most points wins. The teams are robots from two different schools… and there are two robots for each team.”-Jesus. To score, there are two baskets, one blue and one red. The object you use to score points with are frisbees; or yellow foam disks. Each spin-up game has 60 discs in total. You have to shoot in the team's colored basket. Each disk in the basket is worth 5 points. If they miss and land in the color of the opposite tiles, it's one point to the opposite team.

In Conclusion, the robotics team is a club at HHIHS where students can create, build, code, and compete with Vex-Robotics. New Students interested in robotics can be introduced to robotics and how they work while returning students or students with experience, can compete in vex-robotic competitions year-round.

Chess Club Is Back!

By: Carmine Genovese, Nicholas Korneluk and Ashton Johnson

Chess club is officially back in action at Hilton Head Island High School. Students are now able to participate in the long-lost club! Archie Brown is a founding member of the chess club, and he was a crucial part of getting chess club back at HHIHS. Archie is a chess fanatic and wants an array of people to join the club.

The decision to restart the club may have seemed like an obvious one, Archie said “I love the competitive nature of the chess, so we decided to share this love by restarting the club.” Archie was very enthusiastic about his love for chess. He added “Getting a checkmate is a euphoric feeling.”

Not everyone enjoys playing chess, but Archie noted how “Chess is wonderful game that I feel everyone should try at some point, even if it may seem complex” Archie also added he has loved playing his entire life. It is great for Seahawk students to know that the founding members also share a profound love for chess.

The environment is which the game is played in can be one of the best parts about the club, Archie said “Chess club has a  laid-back feel to it, seemingly anyone is able to have fun in the club.” Members should be prepared for a very fun chess and also laid-back environment. Archie also added that “It is so laid back because of the people that are in the club, everyone appreciates what they are doing, but is respectful about it at the same time.”

Some might worry that the are unable to join the club, but Archie said“We would love to have anyone, anyone can join as long as they love chess” Archie wants people to feel welcome about joining the club.

The chess club has been dormant for years, but Archie mentioned how “It did not take a lot of work to reinstate the club, there were so many people that wanted it to return, so it was easy to find members. In a way, the comeback of the chess club symbolizes our love for the game, which makes it special to all of us.”

Overall, the comeback of the chess club might not be the most unlikely story ever told, but it remains very special to the students and faculty that participate in it.

Beta Club Offers Candy Grams to HHIHS Students

By: Celia Walter and Lizzy Markowitz

As a Valentine’s Day fundraiser Beta Club sold candy grams to Hilton Head Island High School students.

There were two different options, a regular candy option and then a bouquet of lollipops if the person receiving the candy gram is allergic to anything in regular candies. Each candy gram costs one dollar and all proceeds went to Beta Club. These candy grams were made by Beta Club members and were handed out on Valentine’s Day during fourth block. To send a candy gram the students had to know the person’s first and last name was to send one. The candy grams were given to anyone at HHIHS and were sold from February sixth through February ninth during all three lunches in the cafeteria.

This is the first fundraiser that the Beta Club has held under the guidance of a new advisor, Mr. Dumais. Mr. Dumais is hoping to gain more funds for Beta Club activities in hopes of expanding the club. When describing the club, Mr. Dumais said, “It’s more just community-based projects, getting yourself out there and learning new skills that you may not have prior or may have but want to strengthen them.”
