The teacher recruitment class for high school seniors

By: David Hernandez and Steven Putbrese

Teacher Cadet is a Seniors only class because it is a “Dual Credit College Level Class.” Seniors will learn about the field of education, observe Elementary or Middle School classes and experience teaching Elementary or Middle School students. A high school teacher, Mr. Wall discusses some information about the course Teacher Cadet and its purpose. Mr. Wall says, “Teacher Cadet serves as a teacher recruitment course to give High School seniors an opportunity to see what the teaching field is like and hopefully encourage them to major in that in college,” and “it gives students a first-hand experience of teaching lessons to each other and elementary students.” Mr. Wall also says, “Seniors will learn about the field of education, they will teach demonstrations to each other and then observe Elementary and Middle School level classes and then go teach those lessons to the Elementary and Middle School students.

”A reason why it is a Senior only class is because “it is a dual credit college-level class,” and Mr. Wall also says, “and the credit has to be transferred the year they take the course.”

Since it is a “College Level class,” it does have its benefits for a college or job transcript. Mr. Wall states, “ you get three hours of college credit that you can transfer to most colleges and universities and it also looks good on a resume for a job because it shows you have experience working and managing with people of all ages.”

Express Your Inner Writer in the Creative Writing Class!

By: Meghan Carrington

When deciding on what classes one should take for their upcoming semesters, consider the Creative Writing class. This class touches on many subjects, some being narrative, song, and play writing. Though presented with a particular topic to work on, there is much freedom on the content allowed to be written. Creative writing allows students to express their inner ideas onto paper. One can take what they’ve learned to build life skills for the future. Mrs. Felix is an English teacher at Hilton Head Island High School who teaches this class, along with Ms. Bode. She encourages students to try out this class. Mrs. Felix explains the importance of the content, saying, “If you can communicate well and capture another person' s imagination, the class is useful in every aspect of life. Writing helps heal the soul.” This class has been about for years. Mrs. Felix explains the roots of it, saying, “Mrs. Sturgis, who is now retired, created a vision for this course that I strive to honor each day. She is my mentor and inspiration.” This class is meant to build confidence in an individual's writing and to be able to share it with others.
