Here at the nest there are multiple events the dance team can perform at, like for example Ms.Monty states “ we can perform at pep rallies, football games, and any home varsity basketball games.”.

Ms. Monty has been a dance teacher for a couple of years now so she truly enjoys coaching her kids.  If you are interested in joining the team Ms.Monty stated that “ You just have to audition, you don’t have to have any previous experiences, all is welcomed.”

Auditions were held around September 20th and Ms.Monty stated “Auditions went great, the only thing is that we would love more people to come and join the team.”

So if you are interested in joining the dance team here at The nest contact Ms. Monty.

HHIHS Student Section

Last friday night the Hilton Head Island football team had an intense game against the Beaufort Eagles.  There was a lot of hype around this game as the Seahawks are looking to have a turn around year and the Eagles coming off of their state championship.  The game was in favor of the Seahawks most the game, as they were up 17-3 at halftime, however the Beaufort Eagles came out ready to fight as they shut out the Seahawks in the second half and made a lat minute field goal to win the game with a final score of 17-20.  The game was highly anticipated and brought a lot of people young and old to the nest.

In an interview with student Ryan Kurz and he said.  “It took a while for everyone to get settled in but once they did the atmosphere was good.”  Many local news outlets were at the game including WHHI sports meaning this game was televised, Ryan said “every turn you took there was another camera.”  The game ended with a lose for the Seahawks, however they still proved many people wrong and showed everyone in the state that they are a great team.  “We weren’t expecting to keep up with them and they crowd got very into the game and it made the game so electric.”

Team Manager Inside Scoop on JV Basketball

By: Ryan Kurz

JV basketball is the future of Hilton head Island High School basketball. It's where players improve themselves and get ready for playing on varsity in one or two years. Kai Staffuer is the team manager and will give the inside scoop on the JV basketball team.

The Hilton Head High School JV basketball team is looking better and better every year, this means that the varsity is two or three years away from being very good. Kai said “the team looks very good this year, lots of freshmen and now sophomores ready and fit to play this year.”

Every year the JV team gets some freshmen from the 8th grade. Over their four years they will slowly develop into a varsity player and sometimes the freshmen are already good this year. Kai said “We got about seven new freshmen this year and they look like really solid players that can be transformed into state champions.”

Last year the JV team had a winning record. This year Kai hopes “that our team is possibly better than last years and we can go undefeated.” He strongly believes that the team can perform better than ever.

Sometimes the team manager plays with the team in the last game or a game that they are losing badly or winning by a lot. Kai says “With how good this team is I think I will get a chance soon when we are destroying other teams.”

Teams like ours have plays the coaches' make-up before the season and the players that they know are on the team already will get them to study and memorize. Kai says his favorite play is “a trick played called omaha 2, it is when all the players line up and run in different directions to trick the other teams defenders.”

Many high school sports teams start conditioning early for people looking to play on the team. Kai says “our team hasn't started this year but will be starting in the upcoming weeks.”

Sometimes the manager helps train or practice with the players. Kai says, “I do practice with the team when they need me, but I never train them, that's the coach's job to train them.”

Some managers do different things as team managers like being a hype man, being helpful etc. Kai said, “I personally help the coaches set up drills. I also make the Gatorade for each game and set up the chairs. I go to each game to support the team.” He also said “I do like what I do but sometimes I get tired like when we have games far away and I get home at like 1 am.”

Hilton Head Island High School season usually starts in December. Kai said the “first game is on the first week in December but can change due to weather or just some problems with one of the schools.”

All About HHIHS Dance Team

By: Mia Heitman

Montgomery, better known as Monty by her students and co-workers, is the dance teacher at Hilton Head Island High School. You can often find her teaching and having fun with many of her students. Monty explains the basics of what the dance team really is.

The main goal of the dance team is to perform at football and basketball half times along with pep rallies to raise school spirit. Anybody is able to join by auditioning for the team. Monty says, “If you can fit in with the group that we have,” a spot might be open for you. However, no skills are required except “a willingness to learn and to be willing to try.” There is no junior varsity or varsity team, so everyone can learn and grow as a dancer together as one team.

The dance team was created at the end of last school year. Monty rallied up students who loved the idea and started the HHIHS dance team. Monty explains, “The team is in its infancy so we can pretty much do whatever we want.” Monty’s hope for the future is to have a showcase or performance other than at sports games. Currently, the team practices each Thursday for an hour, but before basketball season begins, Monty wants to add on another practice.

Monty has always been the dance teacher here at HHIHS. She teaches several dance classes throughout the day in addition to her dance team. She loves dance and loves seeing her students make progress in the classroom. Monty says, “I love teaching dance because this class is a good relaxer throughout the school day.” She enjoys that her students can come into her classroom and get rid of some of the extra tension that they have been holding onto.

At the end of the day, Monty is a fantastic teacher and she is open to anyone joining her team, as she does not turn anyone away. Her advice for anyone wanting to join is, “come and check us out.” All of the dance team members are also students who take dance classes. Monty recommends that people who want to join the team take her class first and “and get to know the rest of the team.”

Right now, the dance team is just beginning. It has many special things in its future and Monty will make sure to achieve those goals.

Connor Maccabe Football Opinion

By Ryan Kurz

The football team is made up of six coaches and 50 athletes all with their own opinion. This opinion is from Connor Maccabe, who plays wide receiver on the Varsity Football team.

Connor says “My favorite player Bo Saxon” there are many reasons to like people  but Connor thinks this because he's “easy to throw around.”

Connor also “I think it’s going to be good, I don't see us losing more than two games.” The current record for the school football team is 2-1. There are seven more games so the odds of them getting a 8-2 record is very high.

Connor thinks “I did fantastic” Connor claims he did good and his stats show it. He got 5 minutes of game time for four tackles which is really good given the time he is given. This was on September Friday the 15th.

Connor said “The coaches are great this year because they have been enforcing rules this year.” This is why the team is performing so well this year.

Connor said “Troy scores the most touchdowns.” Troy is the starting running back for the varsity team and most games is the highest scorer.

Connor states that “Troy has the most yards” for this reason it can be inferred that he is one of the best players on the team in Connor's eyes

Hilton Head High School lost their game against Beaufort High on Friday September the 15th. Connor's opinion on why they lost was because “we made too many silly mistakes in the first half.”

HHIHS is currently 2-1 in the football season. Their player Connor Mccabe thinks that this season “will be a good one.”

This Friday September the 15th the Hilton Head Island Seahawks play Wilson Lions at a home game. Connor said this about the game “I think we'll win friday.” He sounded very hopeful for a win.

Drake Edmonds Cross Country Performance

By: Ryan Kurz

Drake and the rest of the team are some of the best to in Cross country. They have a serious chance of winning states this year. In Their last meet they placed in the top 3. Drake is a racer and is a member of the team.

Drake said, “Jack Coley is my favorite on the team.” There are many reasons for him to be his favorite but Drake says “because i known him since elementary”

Drake stated “As a team we placed first in the race.” This is good that the team has won their race and he is hopeful they can win more. Drake Edmonds said, “I placed 8th” which was their second highest on their team, their first was JD who placed 3rd.

To celebrate, Drake said, “we went out and got a nice team dinner at Mcdonalds.” This shows spirit, friendship, and trust in the team making them have good chemistry.  Going out together means they can work together on a better level then other teams.

“Our next race is this Saturday and in Colombia,” says Drake. This race on Saturday is a big one with 40 schools going to it. Drake also said “this race is a big one”, if they can at least get top 10 the team is looking good.

Drake said, “It’s a fast course so a lot of people will beat their personal best’s.” Drake claims it's going to be an easier course and fans will only know how good they will do when they actually run.

“I think we're going to have a great season and make states,”  drake. This shows faith and trust in his team which proves their amazing team chemistry.

Many athletes use different kinds of shoes because they swear they help their game. Drake's shoes he swears by are “Vapor Fly Gym Threes.” He claims it helps him run faster and win more races. Drake thinks “JD” is the best on the team. He thinks this way because he got 3rd place in the last race. Drake Edmonds thinks he's a “close second” to JD because he placed 8th which is 2nd best on the team.

Many players do things on the bus ride to and from games like talk, run on their phone or sleep. But Drake said he “Listen to Lil Nas X to get hyped for the race.” He also said “This is what separates me from the rest. I am ready before all others.”

When racing people do many different things to keep them focused. Drake does cross country so he has to run for long distances, for long times. This can be very boring at times, but Drake does this to keep himself focused on the game,  “I think to keep pushing, catch the guy in front then again and again till I win.”

Diving into Boys Volleyball

By: Ellie Mastrorocco and Angel Andreucetti

Grant Pagatpatan, setter and captain of the boys volleyball team, spends his weeks training and conditioning to lead the team to victory. When looking into his own strengths and weaknesses, he explains how he serves well and to problematic spots for the other team, but he wants to improve his defense and work on being a better option when the team is out of system. Grant enjoys diving and hitting the floor. Not because it’s painful, but because it is rewarding to keep a tough ball in play. A saved point may come with the price of a floor burn or bruise.

When asked about the strengths and weaknesses of the team as a whole, Grant states- “our team has good stamina to fight back in tough games, but we need to work on maintaining positive energy throughout an entire game. We have a lot of strong players that help build a strong foundation, but putting these pieces together is something we are still perfecting.”

The chemistry between players on and off the court is very beneficial, as the team is primarily composed of upperclassmen, specifically juniors, that have grown up together and been friends for many years. The team gets along well due to the close bond the boys have formed over the years.

As playoffs approach, Grant is looking forward to improving his game and helping the team get as far as they can.
