Sports Leaders

In providing an opportunity for students to take part in the Sports Leaders Qualification, we hope to encourage ‘every young person to realise their potential.’ The qualifications, awards and services are led by the Youth Skill Development Company and are valued by education, government, employers and young people. The qualification is designed to use sport and physical activity to help young people develop and hone their leadership skills whilst helping themselves, and others, stay physically active.

The sessions use sport as a tool to develop students across a range of skills and qualities that will support them not only in their physical education, but moving forward beyond leaving Kingswood Academy.

“The Sports Leaders course helped me grow and develop in so many ways. I feel that I have achieved so much and that is due to the experiences and opportunities that this course offers.” - Olivia

Within the course, students are required to independently plan, lead and evaluate sports and physical activity sessions over a number of tutored hours. Pupils then have the opportunity to demonstrate their leadership skills through opportunities presented in school such as: supporting extra-curricular clubs; house competitions; Yr6 induction day and Sports Day. Additionally, students can complete additional hours within the community at local sports clubs and leisure centres.

Being part of the Sports Leaders also develops 5 key soft skills: communication, self-belief, teamwork, self-management and problem solving. These skills are essential employability skills which students can transfer out of secondary education into other settings like the workplace or further education.

“Throughout the course I led interactive lessons that took me out of my comfort zone, I gained more self assurance in my own ability which led to me improving my own communication skills.” - Luca.
