Computing

Curriculum Intent

Students work through the full breadth of the National Curriculum to develop skills in problem-solving and computational thinking, generating solutions for a range of real-world issues. Through our baselining model, students develop mastery over key computing principles by predicting, running, investigating, modifying and making new processes. We aim to develop students who are digitally literate, secure in the foundational principles of computer science and equipped with the comprehensive knowledge of information technology that will enable them to succeed in their future endeavours.

Computing Whole School Curriculum Contribution

All students have an inner-belief and ambition to fulfil their dreams and live a happy and successful life.

Students are guided through scenario-based activities, such as developing a website for a travel company, to experience future employment opportunities, whilst regularly challenged with new and unfamiliar technologies that allow them to actively participate in the developing digital world.

All students leave our academy with first-rate qualifications:

Students at KS4 have the opportunity to achieve a Creative iMedia qualification which gives them experience in creating digital graphics, creating multi page websites and creating interactive multimedia products. In the long term, studying these topics at Kingswood Academy then enables students to access a vast array of future opportunities, ranging from A levels to BTEC qualifications in the computing sector.

All students develop exceptional character:

Students are consistently challenged through our baseline model, which promotes inner resilience and a growth mindset. Furthermore, students are given the responsibility of their own learning through project work which actively helps to develop their leadership and teamwork. Students use the five stages of PRIMM (predicting, running, investigating, modifying and making new processes) to develop critical thinking skills and inner resilience in order to raise ambition, a transferable skill for the workplace and later life.

All students leave our academy with high levels of cultural and global awareness:

Students are taught through the key stages using a variety of scenarios to enhance their understanding of media news and current events, such as in Year 10 when students investigate intellectual property law to ensure they are aware of the risks involved in the world of digital media, as well as allowing for opportunities to highlight online safety issues.

All students leave with an array of positive memories that last for a lifetime:

Through development of text and block-based programming, students are given first-hand experience of creating and editing code which brings to life their progress on the screen in a visual, instant and exciting way. Students create positive memories through project-based learning that stimulates imagination and curiosity, such as mobile app development and physical computing (micro:bit) in Year 9.
