Music

Curriculum Intent

We believe all students have the right to be successful musicians possessing the breadth of skills and knowledge to allow them to negotiate any musical environment. Our curriculum is designed to provide students with a comprehensive and enriching musical education that fosters creativity, critical thinking, and a deep appreciation for music as an art form. Whether it be the development of ensemble performance, listening and appraising skills or compositional ability, our ambitious offer aims to inspire and empower the next generation of confident, well-rounded young musicians.

Through a culturally diverse spiral curriculum, students develop and enhance their technical, constructive, and expressive musical skills, allowing them to leave Kingswood as expert practitioners with a genuine passion for the craft. At KS4, our students have access to GCSE and BTEC options, facilitating academic and vocational application of the creative discipline. Our broad and deep National Curriculum coverage goes beyond to equip our young learners with valuable skills for future learning and employment.

Music Whole School Curriculum Contribution

All students have an inner-belief and ambition to fulfil their dreams and live a happy and successful life.

The music department is dedicated to ensuring that all our students can experience all components of music to allow them to potentially pursue a career in the music industry. We firmly believe that all students should have the opportunity to explore all possible avenues in a truly inspiring and rewarding career which contributes to our country’s second largest export. We have good working relationships with the highest performing colleges and universities in the county and are always striving to ensure that we can forge links with other music industry professionals.

All students leave our academy with first-rate qualifications:

Our results are outstanding; our curriculum provides our students with an opportunity to follow qualifications in GCSE Music or BTEC Music, which gives students a firm foundation to pursue a career within the music industry. In the BTEC qualification, students are exposed to all elements of the industry including music production, venue management, composition and music law. The GCSE option offers students an opportunity to study musical history, musical analysis, composition using traditional forms, music from around the world and development in performing. We allow students the opportunity to explore, develop and flourish in the area of music that most takes their interest. This allows our students to access college qualifications in the form of graded examinations, A level Music, and Music Technology to enable them to pursue a career in the music industry at the highest level.

All students develop exceptional character:

The music curriculum provides students with experiences that develop a growth mind-set, a phenomenal work ethic, confidence and high levels of grit, resilience and determination to further develop and flourish within the music industry. It aims to develop students who show true musicianship via performance and enhanced production skills. It does this by providing ambitious lessons that test students’ ability to never give up and instils persistence in our students. Both curricular and extra-curricular provision allows our students to develop as leaders and the ability to manage and further develop themselves.

All students leave our academy with high levels of cultural and global awareness:

The music curriculum provides students with high levels of cultural and global awareness. It does this by providing students with a diverse experience of a variety of different musical genres and instruments, ranging from the western classical tradition to diverse music from around the world. These experiences broaden students’ horizons and develop their cultural capital. The music curriculum also provides students with high levels of global awareness of current affairs within the music industry.

All students leave with an array of positive memories that last for a lifetime:

The music department contributes enormously in creating an array of positive memories for students that we hope will last for a lifetime. We actively invest in developing students' ability to perform and are instrumental in delivering top quality events and performances allowing our students to perform in front of their peers in the Christmas Shows and on the national stage at venues such as the Hull City Hall and the Bonus Arena.
