Duke of Edinburgh

Duke of Edinburgh

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a prestigious mark of achievement recognised by higher education and employers, which our students have the opportunity to take part in. Students have selected three activities to do for the length of the programme focused on the three key elements: volunteering, a physical activity and a personal skill. In the summer term, students will take part in a practice and assessed 2 day and 1 night expedition. Our assessed expedition will take place in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales.

In our weekly sessions students have been learning the skills required for our two day expedition at the end of the academic year, taking part in activities such as bag packing, navigation skills, tent building and food planning and preparation. Students will then use these skills on their expeditions, where students will have to work together and use their survival skills to make it to their campsite. This will include outdoor cooking, finding suitable natural drinking sources and top map navigation skills to make sure they make it to the campsite before dark!

Once the evidence is gathered for the three activities and the trip has been signed off by the assessor, students will be awarded with a bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award:

An opportunity to take part in a prestigious national award which develops the leadership skills of innovation and problem-solving.

The bronze award will require students to take part in the following:

In school we hold weekly sessions to prepare students for their expedition and support them with their monthly experiences.

These sessions include:

Once the above have been completed, students will be awarded with a badge and certificate. This is a good qualification to have achieved for future college applications as well as then applying for the silver and possibly gold award in the future.
