Dance Whole School Curriculum Contribution

All students have an inner-belief and ambition to fulfil their dreams and live a happy and successful life.

Our curriculum develops confident, knowledgeable and proficient performers who are inspired to pursue fitness and continue their passion for creativity. Dance gives students the skills and tools to deepen their love and understanding of the subject while simultaneously developing an awareness of the importance in maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle that can positively impact their personal wellbeing. By providing engaging and ambitious lessons, that require students to persevere and push for the knowledge of the performance industry, students gain confidence  and experience to pursue a career in dance and performance, at the most reputable universities and conservatoires, as well as future employers.

All students leave our academy with first-rate qualifications:

Our spiral curriculum provides all students with first-rate qualifications by ensuring they have a knowledge and understanding of dance both from a vocational and academic perspective. The curriculum incorporates important aspects of the BTEC Tech award in Performing Arts such as professional technique, repertoires, roles and responsibilities of both a dancer and choreographer, rehearsal processes, performance processes and reflection processes. With these skills students could progress onto A levels courses, such as Performance studies or A level dance leading onto degrees such as Dance and Choreography. This will help them progress within the performance industry.

All students develop exceptional character:

Our curriculum provides students with hard and soft skills that help to develop confidence, resilience, determination and an outstanding work ethic within the performance context. It aims to develop students to show professionalism and grace throughout a competitive environment, through classwork, through feedback and through workshops. Students develop other soft skills such as teamwork, communication and the ability to lead which will help with confidence when preparing for a happy and successful life beyond Kingswood Academy.

All students leave our academy with high levels of cultural and global awareness:

This curriculum provides students with high levels of cultural and global awareness. It does this by providing students with a diverse experience of a variety of different dance styles such as Western Contemporary Ballet, Asian Contemporary Ballet, Musical Theatre and Street. Students will look at choreographers from a range of cultures such as Matthew Bourne and Akram Khan, and how they create and communicate with their dancers to produce performances. By exploring such topics as equality within dance we study companies such as  Alvin Ailey and Candoco dance company. We also study choreographers such as Hofesh and Andrew Winghart, who celebrate diversity within their company, and use their platforms to promote equality.

All students leave with an array of positive memories that last for a lifetime:

This curriculum provides students with an array of positive memories that last a lifetime through active involvement in multiple performances and shows. Students build positive memories through shared experiences of choreography and performance. Each component of the course requires students to work together to complete a process, which allows for positive interactions to be formed.   Students are provided with a multitude of opportunities to participate in performances such as Kingswood’s Academy Awards, Christmas Talent Shows, opening evenings, school productions and  local dance competitions.  The students have access to perform in front of both peers and competitors, allowing them to develop positive memories of their time at Kingswood Academy.
