Today we take a look at the most infamous day of the 20th century. December 7th, 1941. The day Pearl Harbor was attacked. For most Iowans, this seems like a distant, far off place that we've heard of and seen pictures. But Iowa, especially northeast Iowa, was affected just like the rest of the country. There are no less than seven soldiers that were from northeast Iowa, INCLUDING TWO FROM CHICKASAW COUNTY, that perished on the USS Arizona alone. Today, we will look at how the place you grew up was affected by a major world history event.
You may have seen the display out in the foyer. Have you stopped to look at it? Do you know the stories behind the things that rest in the case? Today you will examine the case and it's contents. Wait for the teacher to instruct you on when to go look. When there, scan the QR codes that are hanging down there for more information.

Below you will see articles fro the Chickasaw County newspapers with news and updates on the people from this area. Read through them a bit. See what the families and friends found out, in most cases days and weeks later. Most of the articles are from December 25th, 1941. That's 18 days later.
Read as many of these as you'd like. There's a lot of interesting stories about the men that both died, and the ones that survived.
