1F. Slavery and How it Makes a War

Read the directions. Each direction ties to a number

1. Read article. It gives history of Slavery in the U.S.

2. Look at the maps below. Where do you see slavery happening, and what happens over the time from the early 1700's- the 1860's. Write this down. Write why you think this happens. There are no wrong answers.

3. Read the article and list a few reasons for Southerners wanting to continue with slavery.

4. Figure out what this document is, and come up with reasons northerners might want to end slavery. You may have to look some of this up using your resources.

At the end of this we will have a discussion comparing the reasons for keeping and the reasons for ending slavery.

Slavery was, and is, viewed very differently depending on where you live in the United States. Today we are going to examine how slavery was viewed in the north, and in the south.

Look at these documents and determine what southerners thought of slavery.

What is this document? What is it trying to do?

3. Read this article and look at the titles of the documents listed.

What argument might a Southerner make to defend slavery? Why would they defend it so strongly?
