6. Propaganda in WW2

One of the questions that I get asked a lot is why the Nazi's believed Hitler when he wanted to start the Holocaust and invade other countries. Many times in war the leaders of the countries will use, what is known as, propaganda to sway the public's opinion of the war or how the country should operate. In some cases it is meant to scare people. In others, subtly let them know what they (the country leader) think should be done. In all case, there is a definite (usually political) outcome that propaganda is trying to convince people about.

Your first task today is to define propaganda. You may use the PDF titled "Propaganda stations" to help you work through each of the stations. Also listed below is a PDF titled "Types of Propaganda". This will help you to know what type of propaganda you are dealing with.

Think of an example where you believe propaganda was used and write it down on a piece of paper

Step 1- Define the word Propaganda

Step 2- Read through Types of Propaganda paper as a table

Step 3- Gallery walk w/ QR codes

My advice: Go to the photo as a group and have one person scan the QR code so you can hear it. Then, one person take a picture of the photo and head back to your tables to work on it together.

Step 4- Once you have done all 6 posters answer the following questions:

-Is propaganda fact or opinion, how do you know?

-Is using propaganda effective?

-Is using propaganda ethical?

-Is the thing you wrote down at the beginning of the lesson propaganda, or something else?

Everyone should write down their own answers. Keep them with you as we will likely turn them in tomorrow.

RULES

1. Don't bother other classes

2. You may be in the hall only when you are working on those posters

3. Everyone writes their own answer page. Use Noteability.

4. When you have completed all posters and are waiting for the other you have the following things to do.

a. answer the questions from step 4. You may discuss as a table, but each person must write down their own answers. (You will be turning these in later)

b. CNN10 or read.

c. Class discussion

Questions:

What is the point of using propaganda?

Does propaganda work if you see one poster, once?

What makes propaganda effective?
