Intro
Welcome to the Ford's Theater National Oratory program.
This year, you will have the opportunity to work with a professional actress, named Heidi Fortune. She will join us virtually a few times this year. In those meetings we will talk about all kinds of different things regarding speaking and presenting yourself and your material.
There are a few words you will need to learn to be prepared for the year. The first three are:
Ethos
Pathos
Logos
Please define these words and write them down.
These words are part of the Rhetorical Triangle. The Rhetorical Triangle is a structure on which we use to organize an argument.
Other words that you will need to know come from the Podium Points, which can be found in the PDF below. These are words that describe certain parts of the way we speak. We will look at these together as a class in a few minutes.
We are now going to give our first speeches on the year. They are going to be spontaneous speeches, in which you are given a topic and 4 minutes to think about what you'd like to say. for these speeches you must speak for no less than 20 seconds, and no more than one minute.
As an audience we are going to watch the speeches and provide feedback.
