The Crypto-Correspondence of [ o ] and [ ʊ ]: Jacobs did not make any use of the letter o when transcribing Milluk phonetically, but neither did he distinguish between the phonetic vowels [ æ ], [ ɛ ], and [ e ], which we hear and distinguish when we write Milluk phonetically. Our easy way of typing Milluk words is a phonemic kind of writing system, so it does not distinguish these phonetic vowels either. Because of the phonetic vowels which we hear when listening to Milluk, but which Jacobs’ transcriptions do not distinguish, we say that Jacobs’ ostensibly phonetic transcriptions are quasi-phonemic, but only in this aspect of his treatment of the vowels, and more in the published Milluk texts than in his handwritten field notes. Even in his handwritten field notes he does not use the phonetic vowels [ æ ], [ e ], and [ o ].

The Phonetic Vowel [ o ]: In phonetically transcribing what we hear from Lolly, we make use of the phonetic vowel [ o ], but only with two Milluk words, the word in the interview segment “He Opened It”, and this word meaning ‘pregnant’. Where we hear [ o ] from Lolly it matches Jacobs’ short | u | which in his handwriting is the phonetic vowel [ ʊ ], the vowel in the English word ‘good’.
