Egg 2

Instant Phonetic Englishization:  ‘mock’ and ‘thigh’ said together as one word, except that the ‘th’ is pronounced with the tongue in position to say L, and the ‘ck’ is pronounced with rounded lips, like pronouncing  [ u ] or [ w ].

The K-Q Sound Correspondence: We see the k-q sound correspondence within Milluk here, but according to Mrs. Peterson’s way of saying the Hanis word, this is not an example of the same sound correspondence between her Milluk and her Hanis, as with some other words.

Short Diphthongs: Mrs. Peterson’s Milluk word | má·qʷɫaⁱ | ‘bird egg’ is found only in Jacobs’ slip-file dictionary, where the Hanis word is | má·qʷɫaɩ |.   Because we see the Milluk word only once in Jacobs’ work with Annie Miner Peterson, we do not get to see the word as | má·qʷɫai | which would no doubt have been another way that she would have pronounced this word, as with other words where there is a long and short version of the diphthong that ends this word.
