Ice Try
Swadesh’s Ice Try: Swadesh tries to get Lolly Metcalf to say a Milluk word that means ‘ice’ in the tape-recorded part of the interview, but he fails twice. He must have gotten that word that we can hear him say from Lolly in the part of the interview before the tape recorder was turned on.

Snow in a Milluk Text: In a Milluk text titled “Snow is the ashes from the hearth of the giant spider", in Jacobs’ (1939) volume of Coos texts, on page 100, Annie Miner Peterson has other forms of this Milluk word that means ‘snow’, such as saying | tɫə_sdlá·lis | ‘the snow’. What Lolly says is evidently a form of the Coos Bay Milluk version of a verb meaning ‘snow’.
We are not sure that we really hear [ sdl ] at the beginning of this word and not just [ sl ]. In the interview segment “Snow”, we are a bit more sure that we hear [ sdl ] at the beginning of this word.
