Blanket

An Exaggerated Ejective: For her second time saying the word Lolly gives up trying to make the word a one-syllable word, even though it really is a one-syllable word.  Instead she shows us that the first consonant really is an ejective, with the popping sound of an ejective.  In the process, Lolly demonstrates that the lateral ejective [ tɬʼ ] can be made to be a syllable onto itself.  Instead of a vowel to make it a syllable, a syllabic L [ l̩ ] takes the place of a vowel.  The English word ‘little’, when pronounced normally, ends with a T [ t ] followed by a syllabic L [ l̩ ].  That is not too far off from how this Milluk word meaning ‘blanket’ starts off.

Instant Phonetic Englishization:  tl!_hah_ee.

A Light Pronunciation of an Ejective: With Lolly’s first time pronouncing this word, we can not really hear that the word is supposed to begin with an ejective.  Lolly has such a light pronunciation of the ejective that here is really no popping sound to tell us that it is an ejective, but we can hear that this is basically a one syllable word.
