The EDP: The Building Blocks of Engineering
The Main Parts of the Engineering Design Process are:
ASK
What are you trying to solve? What have others done in the past (research!)? What are the required parts for a solution to work?
IMAGINE
Come up with many, many possible ideas/brainstorms that could possibly solve your problem. Be sure to reference all research and required criteria.
PLAN
Choose the best design- check with peers and get input! Draw out a final plan that labels all parts, measurements, etc.
CREATE (EVALUATE)
Put your design together!
Test out your design. What are the pros (keep) and cons (to work on) about the design.
IMPROVE
Using what you learned in the Evaluate stage, make improvements and test again!
COMMUNICATE
Share your idea and findings with the world!
*** These steps are not necessarily linear- you do not have to always do them in order. As an engineer, you will be going through the process, all the while testing and evaluating, making improvements, and, in some cases, revisiting the imagine and plan steps. ***
