Self-Portraits

An artist who plagiarizes and passes work off as his or her own, without crediting the source, is committing a serious transgression in the creative community. Any borrowing and appropriating of work must be done mindfully, respectfully, and in a way that properly recognizes the original.

Based on what we know about appropriation, let's discuss the following images:

Assignment:

You will be creating a self-portrait (literal or figurative) based on the same style and composition of an artist (past or present).

Step 1: Research

To begin this project, you need to find out some information about several differenct art styles.

For each style, in your sketchbook, list the common general visual characteristics that you notice as you look. What common colors, shapes, value, texture, movement, proportion, etc. do you see?

Abstraction- What it is & What it looks like

Surrealism- What it is & What it looks like

Pop Art- What it is & What it looks like

Impressionism- What it is & What it looks like

Now that you have made some general observations, you need to refine your ideas...

Step 2: Refine Research

Choose an artist and style from the list below for project inspiration and answer the following questions in your sketchbook:

Abstraction

Surrealism

Pop Art

Impressionism

* You WILL have to do additional research to answer these questions *

1. What is the style?

2. Who is the artist?

3. Based on your research, what are some factors that may have influenced their style?

(their age, the time in history when they were working, gender, their influences, etc.)

4. What elements are common in their work? (2-3)

5. What principles are common in their work? (2-3)

6. How does this artist's work make you feel?

7. Why/how does this artist inspire you?

8. What is your plan to incorporate the artist's style into your self-portriat?

Step 2, pt 2: Make a 5in x 7in color sketch in your sketchbook to synthesize all your ideas. This should be in full color, and it should be very obvious who your srtist is. This will serve as you plan for your final PhotoShop project.

** Bring your sketchbook to Mrs. Yelenick for feedback and a sign-off **

Step 3: Make Art

Given your research, appropriate the imagery style into a digital self-portrait; in this way, you will make the image your own.

You will need to upload an image of yourself (close up or farther away) to work from and reference as you create your inspired self-portrait. If you want to create a drawing to upload and work from, you can, OR you can work solely on the computer. The process is up to you. As you work, be sure to continually save your work as a PhotoShop file (.psd) to avoid accidental deletion.

Measurements: 7 inches (height), 5 inches (width), 73 pixels/inch (resolution)

Techniques Demo- TAKE NOTES! (Rewatch as necessary)

* Impressionist Brush Strokes

* Color Blocking

* Color Splashing

* Opacity/Transparency

Upon completion, save your work as a JPG and upload it onto Google Classroom.

**The JPG is due in Google Classroom during class on 1/17/20.

Turn it into Classroom > Tell Mrs. Yelenick to print > Trim and Mount on Black Paper > Place mounted work in sketchbook

Step 4: Reflect & Communicate

- On your website, go to the page called Self-Portrait.

- First, upload YOUR self-portait that was inspired by your artist.

- Then, upload your artist's image you used as inspirational reference.

- Finally, you will create an artist statement.

** The statement needs to be 5 or more FULL sentences- use your notes for ideas!

** The statement should reflect how you have shifted the work and style and why you made the choices you did.

** Explain the images you chose and explain how they show your identity

** You should also properly credit any sources you used and the artist whose style inspires you.

Your artist statement is due to be finished and ready to be checked/critiqued at the end of class TBD.

TURN IN YOUR WORK: Fill out Rubric> Give your Mounted final work, sketchbook, and rubric to Mrs. Yelenick for a grade.

Step 5: Critiques

- We will be giving qritiques for these projects, but there is a very specific protocol for this process. We will do this as a class, next class period. (Mon, Oct 14th)
