Measurement

Students will...

Understand the imporantce of measurement.

Understand the importance of appropriate measurement tool use.

Big Question: Why is measurement (and HOW we measure) important?

Measurement is how we compare things to each other- it is how we understand the world!

ASK BILL  (until 4:34)

VOCAB

PROPERTIES: things we can observe and measure

LINEAR MEASUREMENT- the distance of something...

LENGTH: ... from end to end

WIDTH: ... from side to side

HEIGHT: ... from top to bottom

DEPTH: ... from front to back

Quick video about USING these properties to solve a problem...

Would you want to measure the distance from here to the moon in inches?

How about in Cheetos?

Why or why not?

Discuss: How do we know what measurements are best suited for the job?

What tools can we use to measure?

Would you want to measure how old you are in feet?

Why or why not?

Day 2

VOCAB

ESTIMATE: to make a rough or approximate calculation; fairly close to the actual, but not quite accurate

ACCURATE: scattered around the right area (points at right location, but far apart and inconsistent)

PRECISE: consistently within a given range (target points are together, but not at the right location)

EXACT: accurate and precise (think a target: accurate=center, precise=consistent)

METRIC DISTANCE:

So, in order to do conversions....

1mm x 10 = 1cm x 100 = 1m x 1000 = 1km

Quick VIDEO about using metric measurement...

How to READ A RULER (using decimals)

PRACTICE WORKSHEET: reading a ruler & using a ruler

On the front, with a METRIC (centimeters/millimeters) ruler, measure the various objects requested on the page. Be sure to be as specific as you can with your measurement (decimals and mm or cm)!

NOTE: If you do not use a ruler to draw your lines, you will not recieve any credit for your drawing! Use a ruler!!

1. Place the midpoint of the protractor on the VERTEX of the angle.

2. Line up one side of the angle with the zero line of the protractor (where you see the number 0)

3. Read the degrees where the other side crosses the number scale.

SCAVENGER HUNT: lab and worksheet

TEAMS OF 2: Using a meter stick or metric tape, find the objects necessary for the scavenger hunt.

** You cannot use an object more than once. No people, please!

INDIVIDUAL: At the bottom, use Google MyMaps to find the answers, be sure to CONVERT to KILOMETERS!

** If you do not label your units, you will not get credit.

INDIVIDUAL: On the back, use a protractor to measure the 5 given angles.
