Forced Perspective Critique

We have already completed one critique- great job!

Now, we will be critiquing our Forced Perspective projects!

Each paragraph should be 4-9 sentences to fully tell me all necessary parts of the critique.

Paragraph 1: Describe what you see- tell me everything you can see in the frame of the picture. Leave NOTHING out!!

  • Artist's name
  • Title of work
  • Type of artwork
  • Subject of the image (scene)
  • Objects in the image
  • First impression––note the characteristics of the artwork that first jump out at you
  • Sensory qualities––identify the predominant mood and visual effect.

Paragraph 2: Look for all the Elements and Principles that you can find. Tell me about EACH one.

This is NOT a list. Be specific WHERE you see it and why it is that Element or Principle.

You should include a MINIMUM OF 4 PRINCIPLES AND 4 ELEMENTS, EACH (total of 8).

  • Line, Shape, Form, Value, Space, Color, & Texture
  • Balance, Emphasis, Movement (visual/implied), Pattern, Repetition, Proportion, Rhythm, Variety, & Unity
  • How each technical element contributes to the overall mood, meaning and look of the artwork.

Paragraph 3: What is the artist trying to do or say? Why do you think that? What parts of the image tell the viewer this message?

  • Communicate the artist's message. Describe what you think the artist is trying to say through the work of art.
  • Describe what the artwork means to you, and why.
  • Explain what you feel is the artist's intended purpose for creating that particular work of art. Examine why the artist made the choices in technique, materials and subject matter and how they relate to the intended purpose.
  • Identify symbols in the artwork and describe how they relate to the artist's technical choices and contribute to the artist's execution of the intended purpose.

Paragraph 4: Your opinion: Is it a good photo? Think about what makes a good Forced Perspective Photo. Is everything in focus? Is the intention of the photo clear to the viewer? Do the subjects look like they are on the same plane (fore/middle/background)? Could anything be changed to make the photograph work better? Would you make this photo, or change it? Why?

  • State what you think the artwork's intention is. For example, its intention may be to evoke nostalgia, to incite anger or to impart beauty. Explain why you feel this way.
  • Describe the artwork's relevance to people as a whole.
  • Explain where you feel the artwork is strong and where you think it falls short or could do better.
