Assignment:
Design a Display Font word to communicate an idea
DUE: WEDNESDAY MAY 11
Graphic designers must find ways to successfully meld text and images together, and so will you!
Assignment Steps:
STEP 1: In your sketchbook, come up with a list of 4 nouns (things), 4 verbs (actions), & 4 adjectives (describing words).
Next to EACH word that you chose, list out 3-5 textures/things that are related to that word.
Use thesaurus.com for ideas
Random Noun Generator, Random Adjective Generator, Random Verb Generator
Try to use unique words, use descriptive ones that are interesting or resonate with you
STEP 2: On the next pages of your sketchbook, create a grid of 4in (wide) by 2in (high) squares. Use a ruler to measure this area.
Make a thumbnail sketch for the best 6 words within these small squares- one per square. Each word should be made out of something that represents it.
Your word should fill the whole space- Top to bottom, side to side!
Look up ideas online if you feel stuck. You want the image to match the word.
Be sure to use your Elements and Princliples worksheet for reference when needed.
This is your idea process, the same that a graphic designer follows.
STEP 3: Once you have created all 6 small word-images, bring your sketchbook to me to discuss which words work the best and for a sign-off in your sketchbook.
STEP 4: After the discussion with the teacher, pick your best 4 word-images, and get them signed off.
STEP 5: Open Photopea and Create a new canvas: (you will make 4 different jpgs total)
TITLE- Lastname_WORD (Yelenick_Dog or Yelenick_Sticky)
Dimensions- 4inches wide x 2inches tall
STEP 6: Search online for textures and colors that may help you bring your word to life.
(Word: Sticky, Search: Honey; you can use this image as part of the word)
STEP 7: Using your PhotoShop tools, give your word life and dimension.
Tools that may be helpful: lasso, eraser, marquee, spot healing brush tool, pencil/brush tool, paint bucket, dodge/burn tool, shape tool, and text tool.
Move tool, marquee tool Eraser tool, dodge/burn tool Lasso tool, paint bucket
STEP 8: Check your image- does it match your original idea in your sketchbook? If yes,
move on to step 9, if no, keep working on it until it is perfect!
STEP 9: Repeat STEPS 5-8 for your other 3 word-images you picked out.
STEP 10: Save your images as JPEGs and put them on your website on a new page called, "Typography"
-- if you do not have this page, MAKE ONE
