Music and Sound

Music REALLY makes a difference in how you understand a movie!

NPR: The Sounds of James Bond

We are going to watch a movie- both with and without sound- to compare and contrast the impact that sound can really have.

After we watch it, you must write a short essay on your website explaining what about sounds and music in movies that is so important, then we will make our own clips whose meaning changes when music is present/absent.

STEP 1: Create a new page called Music and Sound

STEP 2: In class, watch the movie clip with and without sound.

STEP 3: Discuss what we saw and heard.

How does your understanding of the film clip change?

How does sound/music set up the characters and environment?

What feelings can the sound give you that you did not feel while watching without sound?

STEP 4: Write 4 Paragraphs, each paragraph is 3-5 sentences long.

Paragraph 1: Introduction-

Talk about sounds in movies. Tell the reader why a movie maker might choose to include or not include sounds and music in film.

Paragraph 2:Movies without Sounds-

Talk about what you can tell from a movie when there is not sound. Do you notice other things? Where is your focus?

Paragraph 3: Movies with Sounds-

Talk about how sounds change a viewer's understanding of the film. Do feelings seem more clear? More intense? Why?

Paragraph 4: Conclusion-

Tie it all together; revisit all your ideas and sum them up.

STEP 5: Print off a copy of your essay to hand in for a grade with the rubric (below).

(See the A/V home page for a reminder on how to upload and save videos)

Share it with Mrs. Yelenick.

We will be watching these on Friday!
