Kognity

So your students have access to Kognity, what do you/they do now? Kognity describe themselves as a digital publisher which combines the power of technology and textbooks to create a vastly elevated learning experience. So the key here is to determine exactly what it is about this experience that qualifies as 'elevated', compared to traditional paper textbook, or perhaps their PDF equivalents.

The key here is RAT, don't use Kognity to Replace traditional textbooks, use it to Amplify, or Transform what a traditional textbook can do:

Amplify

Available anywhere any time, any device with an internet connection.

Lookup terms with a click to clarify meaning.

EAL students can use Google Translate to also read the content in their home language.

Embedded videos enhance opportunities to have insightful explanations that build on the text.

Transform

Retention and comprehension - you can easily check to see what you're students have read, this can either by under their own cognisance, or based on reading assignments you have set.

Revision - it is well known that the best form of revision is retrieval through self testing;

"Practice testing and distributed practice received high utility assessments because they benefit learners of different ages and abilities and have been shown to boost students’ performance across many criterion tasks and even in educational contexts."

Kognity has a plethora of self testing mechanisms built into the platform, from tests set by the teachers, so tests students can opt to take themselves to facilitate their understanding of specific content.

Feedback - Review progress at the level of the whole class, or at the level of individual students to see where there as aspects of the course that are presenting your students with difficulty that you might need to follow up on in class.

Top Tips

The green progress bar indicates that they correctly answered the two questions at the end of the respective section correctly.

Reading & Question Assignments

If you set an assignment, you can easily determine if there are specific questions that many/most students in the class struggle with. In theory you can burrow down into the details for each student, but in my experience this is impractical and inconvenient, the whole class data is probably all you need....
