Google Slides Audio

You can add audio to any Google Slide, and use this audio in all sorts of clever ways:

  • Audio file plays automatically when you display a slide.

  • Click an audio icon (the one at the top of this page) to play an audio file.

  • Make the icon transparent so you can click in a section of a slide like an image, to play the audio clip.

No doubt all sorts of clever clogs will come up with all sorts of other possibilities, but I think these are the main uses..

But.

There's a catch. You can only use audio files in 'legacy formats' ie mp3 and wav files (old so widely supported). So the default format on the device you use is unlikely to work, you will need to convert the file for it to work, how? I'm glad you asked

Convert Audio Files to MP3

There are several options, but for the purposes of this I'm assuming a Mac.*

  • Use your phone to record a voice memo, import it to Music (previously iTunes), and export from Music as an mp3.
    File > Convert > Create mp3 version.

  • Record/import the audio in an app like GarageBand (or Audacity) which allow you to export to mp3.

  • You can use a free audio converter software program to convert audio files to mp3 format. There are several online converters, but a free and easy converter is media.io Audio Converter., although if you have several files to convert this can be a bit tedious...

*With the exception of GarageBand, I'm pretty sure this will work on Windows as well

Voice Memo & Apple Music

This is the simplest for Apple Mac users, as it uses software that comes with every Mac, here's the illustrated guide:

Record the audio clip with the Voice Memo app on your iPhone, iPad, or your Mac.

  • Drag the audio clip/file into the Music App

  • Select it, then choose File > Convert > Create MP3 Version

If you don't see the MP3 option, you need to adjust your preferences...

Choose Music > Preferences, click Files, and click Import Settings.

In the Import Using pop-up menu, choose MP3 Encoder, and click OK to save the settings.

  • You will see a second file appear, this is the MP3 version

  • Drag and drop this file to the Desktop, and upload it to Google Drive

  • This audio file can be inserted into a Google Slide
