How do you “get into character” as an actor?

Modern acting techniques mostly come from the Russian dramatist, Konstantin Stanislavski. He created a “method” for actors to make character choices based on internal thoughts. Stanislavski Acting Methodology.
A very different technique came later from another Russian dramatist, Michael Chekhov. Although he was a student of Stanislavski, his technique is based much more on making physical choices to create a character. 5 Guiding Principles From Chekhov.
