Permanent Substitute Teacher Regulation

For the purpose of this policy, a permanent substitute is defined as a teacher retained by the administration to serve as a classroom teacher for 21 consecutive days or more in the same assignment.

An individual retained as a permanent substitute teacher will be compensated at a rate of $50.00 per day for the first 20 days of service. On the 21st day and thereafter the per diem rate of compensation will be adjusted to comply with B-1 on the professional salary schedule and will be retroactive to the first day of service.

Permanent substitute teachers are not eligible for any other benefits to include sick days personal days, bereavement leave or health insurance. In addition, permanent substitute teachers are not recognized as contributors to the Massachusetts Teachers Retirement System.
