Bus Chaperone Guidelines
In order to ensure safe and responsible student bus behavior on field trips, game trips, and other activities requiring busing, coaches and chaperones are requested to adhere to the following guidelines:
Ø All coaches and chaperones will pass a CORI.
Ø Talk to your students before any bus trip. Discuss your behavior expectations. Behavior on a bus is an extension of school behavior.
Ø Discuss with student that when outside of school on a bus, at a game, on a field trip, etc., they respect the school in the public's eye. Portray their school as a school of responsible young adults.
Ø As a chaperone or coach, you need to be a visible presence on the bus. Make frequent checks as to what students are doing on the bus. Change your seat periodically.
Ø Loud music, noisy behavior, students out of their bus seats are all distracting to the bus driver. Don't allow it.
Ø Food stops are to be scheduled prior to the trip and approved by an administrator.
Ø Once at your destination ... game, field trip site, you must monitor where students are at all times. Also, before students disembark, check the aisles and seats for any trash, etc. A plastic bag to hold disposables is helpful on any bus trip.
Ø In summary, past experience has taught us that field trips requiring busing students away from school offer a time of high excitement for students. These trips also frequently result in students making behavior choices they might not make at school. As adults in charge of these students, we must demand the same responsible behavior we require in the classroom. Monitor your charges…be diligent.
