STAFF ETHICS / CONFLICT OF INTEREST
The School Committee expects members of its professional staff to be familiar with the code of ethics that applies to their profession and to adhere to it in their relationships with students, parents, coworkers, and officials of the school system.
No employee of the District will engage in or have a financial interest in, directly or indirectly, any activity that conflicts or raises a reasonable question of conflict with his/her duties and responsibilities in the school system. Nor will any staff member engage in any type of private business during school time or on school property.
Employees will not engage in work of any type where information concerning customer, client, or employer originates from any information available to them through school sources.
In the event a family member of a district employee applies for a position in the district, the Superintendent shall be immediately informed. For purposes of this policy, family member includes spouse, child, parent, sibling, in-law, nephew, niece and domestic partner. Any district employee that would be involved in the hiring/interview process of a family member must recuse him/herself from all discussions and activities, including informal conversation, directly associated with that process. If the candidate is subsequently employed by the district, the Superintendent shall publicly inform the School Committee of the hiring and family relationship at the next scheduled school committee meeting and ensure such notification is entered into the minutes.
There should be no conflict of interest in the supervision and evaluation of any employee. At no time may any employee be supervised or evaluated by any family member. The employee’s work assignment, at the Superintendent’s discretion, may be excluded from a department, building, or other work environment to avoid the appearance of any possible conflict of interest.
School Committee members are advised to recuse themselves from any action that would affect the interest of any district contracted or employed family member.
