SCHOOL COMMITTEE GOALS PROCESS

As statute requires annual School Committee approval of District and Superintendent goals it is recommended that the Ashburnham-Westminster Regional School Committee follow a process of internal goal setting which supports not only its “oversight role” but may also include professional practice goals which are designed to increase capacity and effectiveness as individual members define the skills, knowledge, and practices they need to govern effectively.

Such goals must be fully aligned with the strategic objectives and outcomes of the District Strategic Plan, the district’s official roadmap for improvement. The School Committee goals should be updated annually to ensure coherence and reflect the district’s current realities and priorities. Planning for improvement is a continuous process. To that end it is recommended that, in April of each year, the Committee meet in retreat with the two-fold objective of a self-evaluation and the setting, at the recommendation of the Goals Subcommittee (as referenced below), of overall goals for the ensuing year.

In accordance with §7.1 of the AWRSD Bylaws, a Standing Subcommittee of the School Committee, “The Goals Subcommittee,” is hereby established.

Scope of Responsibility:

The Goals Subcommittee is charged with overall administration and enforcement of this policy “School Committee Goals Process.”

Specific Duties:

The Goals Subcommittee

· has authority to ensure that all terms of this policy are effectuated in a timely and responsible manner.
