WEIGHT of 3 WHEELER at MOT time and getting incorrectly charged the Class 4 rate

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Some Reliant 3 wheeler owners are being charged the Class 4 price for an MOT instead of the Class 3 price .

They are being told that their 3 wheeler is over the 450 kg limit and that is why it is being charged at the Class 4 price .

For example ;

One owner was told his 1993 Robin was 580 kg and he should not be driving it on his B1 licence !!!!

The MOT station person is wrong and is confusing the BRAKING WEIGHT with the STANDARD ACCEPTED TYPE APPROVED WEIGHT OF THE MODEL OF VEHICLE .

The BRAKING WEIGHT shown on the computer screen { Known as the VTS Device } is the

STANDARD ACCEPTED TYPE APPROVED WEIGHT OF THE MODEL OF VEHICLE

PLUS an

ADDITIONAL EXTRA WEIGHT BUILT IN of 140 kg to allow for the driver , fuel , tools etc ,

as per the following extract from the MOT manual

http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_380.htm

Quote:

Class 3 & 4 ; Determine the brake testing weight for the vehicle, e.g. from the VTS Device. The weight includes an element of 140kg for the driver, fuel, tools, etc.

Therefore a Robin weight of 440 kg PLUS the 140 kg for the driver etc = 580 kg

Quite a few Mot testers do not understand how it works ,

only see the 580 kg , and charge at the class 4 rate .
