GEARBOX " C " CLIP ; FITTING ; One method of fitting

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

WORK IN PROGRESS

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

One fiddly job on the Reliant is the " C " shaped clip which

holds the gear lever in place !

It is made much easier if the centre console is slack

so you can get a wee bit more movement .

I have shown the fitting of the " C " clip without the centre console

so that the sequence of events is hopefully clearer .

NOTE ;

This is only one method of fitting

and other methods are just as good .

The best method is the one that works for YOU

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Tie string around the " C " clip before you start

Picture of the position of the holes where the " C " clip goes in

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Fit the gear lever in the slots making sure that the offset { if any }

is pointing towards the drivers side .

Try to get all 4 forward gears by keeping the gear lever

pressed down while selecting .

Fit the metal domed cover over the spring

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Fit one side of the " C " clip into the hole .

{ A good tip from R3W forum member " wheaters "

is to file a very shallow groove in the dome just above the holes .

This acts as a help in making sure that the " C " clip is assisted in locating the hole }

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Leave this side of the " C " clip out of the hole for the moment

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Fit the top domed cover and locate the front peg of the " C " clip into the hole .

You should be able to feel it clicking into position

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Fit the rear side of the " C " clip into the hole using a thin

screwdriver or long nose pliers .

A good tip given by R3W member pop-rivet is to use

a pair of old locking bent surgical forceps .

You might fit the " C " clip using only your fingers .

This is the part of the proceedings when you wish

you had tied the piece of string to the " C " clip to stop it

flying away into an unknown part of the universe ! !

The string also helps to pull open the " C " clip by

keeping a little tension on the string .

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

When both ends of the " C " clip are located in the holes

grip the gear lever and lift it up to ensure that it cannot lift out .

Now once again check that you are getting all 4 forward gears and reverse
