SUSPENSION ; LEAF SPRINGS & SHACKLES ; SET UP

Have a look at the hangers and the springs and you will see there are rubber bushes surrounding the tubes where the bolts go through .

The bolts must be torqued up so that it grips the tube .

This means that when the suspension is moved up or down that the rubbers act as extra dampers .

The leaf springs to chassis should be tightened to 35 to 40 lbft

The leaf springs to shackles should be tightened to 35 to 40 lbft

The shackles to chassis should be tightened to 35 to 40 lbft

The way I set mine up is to assemble the suspension as normal with the car on LEVEL ground and the suspension as normal with an empty car .

Measure the distance to the ground from under the chassis at a point just behind where the rear wheel jacking point is .

Jack up the car on one side only to the point where the damper is FULLY extended and remeasure the distance to the ground from under the chassis at a point just behind where the rear wheel jacking point is .

Lower the car to the halfway measurement and tighten all the bolts to the correct torque on that side

Do the same on the other side .

The reasoning behind this is that the rubber bushes will be flexed in equal distances

The above sequence might be the wrong way to do it but it has worked for me .
