ENGINE MOUNTS

Had trouble removing the front rubber engine mounts with the metal covers over them ?

Perhaps the following mod I do to the metal caps before I fit them will make things a wee bit easier .

................

PLACE A BIT OF MASKING TAPE OR SIMILAR IN A SINGLE LINE FROM ONE SIDE OF THE METAL COVER RIGHT OVER TO THE OTHER SIDE .

MARK A CENTRE POINT .

DRILL A PILOT HOLE.

.............

DRILL A HOLE RIGHT THROUGH BOTH SIDES OF THE METAL COVER SO THAT A CROSS HEAD SCREWDRIVER , OR OTHER LENGTH OF SUITABLE ROD , CAN BE INSERTED THROUGH THE SLOTS .

..............

Place the metal covers over the new rubber engine mounts

and fit into the front engine bracket .

................

In the future , if the bottom of the rubber mount has sheared and you have problems getting the top mounts out , all you have to do is either ;

{ 1 } Heat a crosshead screwdriver , or other length of suitable rod , and burn a hole through the rubber then insert a good crosshead screwdriver ,or other length of suitable rod , right through the metal cover and the mounting rubber and it makes it easier to turn

{ 2 } Drill a hole through the rubber , insert a good crosshead screwdriver or other length of suitable rod right through the metal cover and the mounting rubber and it makes it easier to turn

If you are bothered about oil contamination , just plug the holes insitu with Instant Gasket /Rubber Seal .

It has been brought to my attention by World of Reliant forum member " johno " that you might only have to cut 5mm off the Landrover rubbers on some Reliant models instead of the 13mm that Adrian had to cut off to fit the earlier Rialto .

Advice is to try a 5mm cut and see if that fits before you cut it to 13mm

" Johno " added the following advice re a 1992 Mk2 Robin ;

To be precise (for your website)

The right side(driver side) needed no modification.

The left side (passenger side) 5mm removed from the base plate steel of the rubber mount and also required removal of the rubber ridge just adjacent to the cut for clearance on the chassis cross bar.

:roll:

I used my angle grinder which is fine if you can put up with the burning rubber smell The chassis side holes are slotted and the new mount threads fit perfectly, although the engine front plate had to be drilled to 10mm after grinding off the captive nuts.

I am going to use Nylock type nuts to secure both top and bottom.
