HOW TO CHECK THE AXLE RATIO

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGkwb76tkDw

NOTE ; YOU MUST STOP ONE WHEEL FROM TURNING TO GET THE CORRECT RATIO .

Turn the other WHEEL 10 times and count how may turns the PROP makes .

Write them down .

Double the turns on the shaft and divide by 10 and that is the ratio .

Example ;

Wheel ; Amount of turns = 10

Prop ; Amount of turns = 17 .5

Double the prop turns = 17.5 x 2 = 35 turns

Divide the doubled prop turns by 10 gives the ratio of 3.5

Following info from Reliant World forum member " Azzy " ;

The late Robin axle (Mini 3 hole backplate) are wider by 1" (1/2" each side) compared to the 4 hole backplate axles used on the Mk1 Robin's/Rialto's/Kitten's

(need to recheck the Kitten axle width but I think it was the same as the Rialto/Mk1 Robin).

I have a couple of thoughts in the reason for this and a couple of explanations to some peoples problems with wheel clearance with some wheels..

The late Robin's (Mini 3 hole backplate) also had the Mini-lites (optional extra? never did look at why they had them) and different steel wheels (12"),

I have heard people having clearance issues with some wheels with some tyres on Rialto's etc but not when they fit them on a late Robin's (Mini 3 hole backplate) .

The extra length after the leaf spring mount will act as a (1/2") wheel spacer which usually isn't used on factory produced cars (might be wrong but I've never seen them from factory on a Reliant).

Obviously with a wider axle the half shafts are also slightly longer.

Here are a couple of pictures to compare.

Robin 750 vs late Robin (mini 3 hole backplate) - note bearing dia

The nice 750 Robin axle that's giving up its guts for Phoenix.

Note the two stubs on the left, I've yet to figure out if this means its a "van" axle, if its a 3.54 diff (which I think is most likely), or if they were used on the Mk1 Robin's and Kitten's.

AXLE ; BREATHER HOLE ; LOCATION

Info below was extracted from an old Reliant World Link

The axle breather hole is located on the top rear position on the left hand { passenger side } axle tube though I have seen it on both axle tubes , approx six and a half inches in from the lip where the tube is fitted to the housing .

The hole is about 1/16 inch .

If you cannot locate the hole you can just place some masking tape over where the hole should have been .

Mark the position for a new hole and drill a new hole .

Cover the end of the drill bit in grease to catch the swarf .

Drill slowly and clean the swarf off regularly .

When the hole is drilled get a suitable sized split pin { stainless is best } , cut it down a wee bit and slightly open up the end .

Insert the split pin in the hole and cover with the standard brake pipe clip which fits around the axle .

AXLE ; WHEEL FITTING INFO

QUESTION ; Can you fit the later Robin 12 inch wheels to the Earlier 10 inch axle and vice versa ?

Thanks to Reliant World forum administrator , sparesman2000 , for the following info ;

10 INCH REAR AXLES ;

Can only take 10 inch wheels unless spacers are used with 12 inch WHEELS

12 INCH REAR AXLES; {Mid 1990,s onwards axles which are fitted with the Mini brake system}

Will happily take either 10 or 12 inch wheels

HOW TO MEASURE A BEARING ;

INFO FROM BEARING KING .CO.UK

http://www.bearing-king.co.uk/how-to-measure-a-bearing.php

Info below was copied from the excellent website ;

www.bearing-king.co.uk

How to measure a bearing

Sometimes you may need to identify a bearing due to general wear and tear.

Most bearing references now are laser stamped but these wear and rub off more quickly than the previous method, which was engraved deep in the bearing's metal.

Bearing Sizes

Bearing measuring example

Each bearing has an inside diameter, outside diameter and width diameter in that order.

Most bearings are metric in size, but can also be imperial.

On our site, each bearing shows its principal dimensions.

d = Inside diameter

D = Outside diameter

B/T = Width diameter

You can search for a bearing entering this information on the home page in the boxes provided.

Once you have identified the bearing's code some bearings come complete with seals or shields. This is known as the suffix in the bearings reference.

Bearing Example

6205 2RS1C3

The bearing type design that you need is a single row deep groove ball bearing with the following dimensions and suffix.

d = 25mm

D = 52mm

B/T = 15mm

Result = 6205

The bearing also has a seal either side of the bearing.

2RS1 = 2 Rubber seals

2RSR = 2 Rubber seals

DDU = 2 Rubber seals

2Z = 2 Metal shields

ZZ = 2 Metal Shields

Result = 6205 2RS1

And the internal clearance being C3 means that the bearing has room for expansion if needed between the races of the bearing, whilst holding the outer ring and moving the inner ring in a radial movement you will detect a little amount of play between the 2 rings. All standard clearance bearings have this movement, it may only be a small amount of movement but is controlled by international standards.

C3 means the bearing has more clearance than standard.

For example we may use C3 clearance on bearings where a cold start up application my cause the balls to heat up quickly, the heat needs to go somewhere. Some of the heat gets passed through the outer race to the housing and the inner race to the shaft, this causes expansion which closes up the clearance in the bearing. If you did not allow for this clearance the bearing would not have room for expansion and lead to bearing failure.

C2 = Clearance less than normal

C3 = Clearance greater than normal

C4 = Clearance greater than C3

Result = 6205 2RS1C3

Bearing Data

Bearing codes need not be a puzzle

Here we will try & explain some of the bearing data that could help you have a better understanding of what at first might just look like a bunch of numbers,

We will start with the most common asked questions,

Bearing Suffixes:

Suffixes are used to identify designs or variants which differ in some way from the original design, or which differ from the current standard design, each bearing manufacture have there own suffix & this is where it becomes a little confusing,

The most commonly used suffixes are listed below,

Suffix ; ....... RS , LU , DU , RSR , E

Type ; ........ Bearing with one rubber seal

Example ; .. 6205 LU

Suffix ; ........ 2RS , 2RSH , 2RS1 , LLU , DDU , 2RSR , EE
