PROPSHAFT STUFF

If you are going to change just the rear universal joint and leave the front one in position you need to split the propshaft at the sliding section .

* Before you split the propshaft draw or scribe a marker line through both sections as shown in photo below .

.........

USE PIPE PLIERS OR A STRAP WRENCH AT THE POINT SHOWN TO REMOVE THE PROPSHAFT RING

...........

NOTE THE POSITION OF THE PIPE WRENCH ON THE PROPSHAFT RING .

IF YOU TRY TO TAKE IT OFF AT THE OTHER END THEN THE RING THREADS JUST DIG DEEPER INTO THE THREADS BELOW .

................

THIS IS WHAT THE SPLINED SECTION LOOKS LIKE .

............

PROPSHAFT ALIGNMENT.

If you have already taken the complete propshaft off make sure that the fixed portions of the two sections of the propshaft are inline as per the photo below .

If you wish to split the two sections of the propshaft and they are correctly lined up as per photo below , draw or scribe a marker line through both sections as shown in photo below so that you can relocate them in the correct position .

* { If the sections are not lined up then there is no need to mark the two sections but you will still need to split the two sections and line them up correctly }

PROPSHAFT REMOVAL ;

Original bolts did not have a bolt hex head .

They were round with a flat on one side .

As you undo the nut the bolt will rotate .

Turn the bolt till the flat is on the inside .

Get a 2 inch stubby flat blade screwdriver and jam it between the flange and the bolt .

This stops the bolt turning .

Slacken the prop rear bolts at the wheel end first and remove 2 only .

Leave two slightly nipped up .

To get access to bolts put car in neutral and turn rear wheel .

Then put in 1st gear to remove bolts .

Repeat as required .

REAR IS EASY

FRONT REQUIRES PATIENCE AND A GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF PROFANITY

PROPSHAFT UNIVERSAL JOINTS REMOVAL & REPLACEMENT ;

Wire brush the muck off and then remove the four circlips .

Heat up the the metal a wee bit .

I use a heavy hide faced mallet so as not to damage the faces and just clout the ends .

You will see the bearings start to work their way out .

You can get a slim metal bar on the centre of the 4 way connector and tap each side of that and it helps drive the old bearing out

.

Make sure that the circlip grooves are cleaned out before you start fitting the new UJ .

You can use a " G " clamp or large vice to press the bearings in .

Also make sure that , when you are pressing the new bearings in , the 4 way joint is free inside the bearings you are going to press in .

Press in gently stopping to check that the bearings are going in evenly
