WIRING ON EARLY ROBINS WITHOUT A COURTESY LIGHT SWITCH

PURPLE WIRE ;

The power is supplied to one side of the festoon bulb { Long sausage shape bulb } by the Purple wire which is live all the time and is supplied from the fusebox .

BLACK WIRE ;

The Interior Lamp Unit has an Earth wire attached to the lamp unit by one of the two screws which attach it to the body .

The festoon bulb is earthed and lit when the switch is flicked over and the wee flat plate makes the connection by touching the other side of the bulb holder and completes the circuit ,

PURPLE WIRE ;

PURPLE / WHITE WIRE ;

The Purple / White wire is attached to the other side of the Festoon bulb and supplies an Earth supply connection to the courtesy light switch which then earths the bulb .

This lights the bulb when the door is opened without the driver having to operate the interior lamp ON / OFF switch .

The courtesy switches are sometime prone to corrosion which then causes them to earth all the time and this keeps the interior permanently on .

FAULT ;

The bulb stays lit when the unit is switched off .

REASON ;

The power might be earthing through the courtesy switch .

SOLUTION ;

Remove the Purple / White wire and blank end off .

{ This of course means that you will have no courtesy switch but your interior lamp will work normally using the ON / OFF switch }

Or

Replace the courtesy switch
