For my IB language I have chosen Spanish. I have always enjoyed learning languages. For me, Spanish is a difficult language to comprehend; however, with patience I was able to gather an understanding.
We began with the basics and practised speaking to one another to help us understand the structure of Spanish. The teaching techniques used by my teacher were extremely helpful and allowed me to memorise the necessary grammar and vocabulary I needed to begin speaking Spanish.
Alongside learning the language we also gain a deeper understanding of Spanish culture and what it means to be a Spanish speaker. I believe that Spanish is an extremely useful asset as it is spoken across the world. In the most recent unit we learnt many things, one example is how we learnt to speak to our family members and also be able to describe them.
This was challenging as all words were new and confusing, but with the guidance of the teacher, myself and my classmates were able to name and describe each of our family members. Learning the basic sentence structure and vocabulary allowed me to write sentences and have conversations with my fellow peers and my teacher. It is extremely exciting to learn new words and structures, while also being able to use what I have learnt and apply it in the present time.
Another topic we have begun learning about is how to describe what someone is wearing. Learning how to describe what someone is wearing lets you connect language with real life. For example, you get to practise in ways that feel natural, like talking about what you or your friends are wearing, and you can build your vocabulary with words that you might use every day. Plus, forming sentences about clothes helps you become more comfortable with Spanish sentence structure. It's crucial to learn how to describe clothes in Spanish since it builds the fundamental abilities that will enable you to participate in regular discussions. When you're meeting new people, shopping, or discussing your personal style, it helps to be able to explain appearances. Building confidence is another benefit of this course, which is crucial for learning any language and using it outside of the classroom.
