A Monster Calls

Reading the book ‘A Monster Calls’ in Y7

Being an English Subject Prefect:

Joining Westminster Academy in Y7, I couldn’t wait to start English. Knowing all the novels we would read just made me more and more eager to start, as I love reading. After a couple of months in Westminster Academy, an amazing opportunity had came up and it seemed like it was meant just for me: to be a Subject Prefect, in any subject you would like to represent. I knew that I needed to apply, without even thinking I made the decision to apply to be a Prefect. After all the google forms and interviews, I got the role!

‘A Monster Calls’

We have read many novels throughout the year, such as: Medusa, Price We Pay For The Sun (poem), A Picnic in Jammu (poem), The Paradise Carpet (poem) etc. All of the novels, stories, speeches we have read were amazing but in my opinion the one that stands out the most is ‘A Monster Calls’.  This book is about a young boy who experiences lots of grief and has a monster who helps him to deal with his situation throughout the story. This book has lots of meaning behind it, it teaches us that in life it is not always going to be easy, we will have to deal with grief and hard situations. We have read half the book so far and to help us understand the book more we have been annotating and analysing it. This term, we are working with our teacher (Mr Smith) to present a speech, which is an analysis on how is grief represented in this book. I have enjoyed reading this book a lot and cannot wait for next year, and to read more interesting books.

I have learnt a lot this year in English and the year has not even finished yet. I am grateful to have teachers that are able to provide very advanced, fun and interesting lessons.

These are my favourite books we have read this year!
