Learning Module #1
Ava began with the basics because this was her first time working with an Arduino. To begin, she used Tinkercad to make a few simple projects, including a blinking LED program.
When she switched to the physical Arduino, she used a potentiometer to sequentially turn a row of LED's on and off as it was turned.
Learning Module #2
Ava used the soldering kit to guide her through her first experience with soldering.
Learning Module #3
Ava and Simeon G. created a non-contact candy dispenser. They wanted to pose a solution to many of the challenges surrounding physical contact while celebrating Halloween during a pandemic.
They originally planned to integrate an Arduino and Alexa Echo Dot so the words "Trick or Treat" would activate the dispenser, but they were unable to connect the Alexa to the Arduino. Ultimately, they used an ultrasonic sensor to activate the dispenser, so they were still able to create a candy dispenser that was touch-free.
Learning Module #4
Ava began with a few simple projects, like a flashing heart, to familiarize herself with the Micro:bit. She then created a simple Micro:bit lesson for the Warren Hills Lending Library and her own Rock-Paper-Scissors game that uses radio waves to communicate each player's tool choice and the winner between two Micro:bits. Finally, she connected an LED strip (and a shoe) to the Micro:bit to create her own light-up shoes that switch colors with each step.
Learning Module #5
Ava and Simeon designed a curriculum that would use a micro:bit to teach coding basics to elementary school students. They made six lessons, each of which included an introduction to the concepts, an activity to demonstrate the coding concepts, a coding tutorial, questions to check for understanding, and a summary of everything learned in that lesson. They also made a youtube channel, worked on lesson plans, and updated the Warren Hills Digital Lending Library website.
Learning Module #6
Ava and Emma S. created their own modification of the game Minecraft (a "Minecraft mod"). They gained their footing in modding by following several tutorials linked in the write-up above, which included making new materials, blocks, crafting recipes, smelting capabilities, and tools. Then, they used what they learned from the tutorials to add a new sword to the game, which required
