The Santripaal System is a relatively small collation of planets and an asteroid belt near the periphery of the Lernaean Cluster. For three millennia after its initial colonisation, it remained largely unremarkable, providing a satisfactory output of minerals from its first planet of Umesh, as well as periodically fulfilling its tithe obligations with the capital world the system itself was named after.
However, 18 years ago, Santripaal made itself known to many a scribe's haggard eyes when the civilised world ceased all communications with the wider sector. When the Navis Imperialis eventually elected to send a Task Unit to investigate the blackout, they were swiftly intercepted by an Inquisitorial Cruiser, the captain of whom ordered them to turn back. A short standoff ensued, during which the Navy, who were loathe to surrender an unexceptional, yet still numerically prevalent source of materials and manpower, slowly escalated their presence. The deadlock was broken when the Navy reached Task Force strength, and the Inquisiton demonstrated a rare act of compromise and allowed for the vessels to set up a dry dock and monitoring post within the system's asteroid belt.
As of now, public information on Santripaal is scarce, with few outside the upper echelon of the Navis Imperialis being even aware of the aforementioned run-in with the Inquisition. However, with the formal entry of Battlegroup Chiros, such obscurity may soon be set to dissolve.
The planetary system comprises the worlds of Umesh, Santripaal, and Nemarch, as well as a prominent asteroid belt called the Ackeron Belt

Geography/Environment: Rocky surface hiding a mineral-rich underground, sulfuric clouds with acidic rain, inhospitable atmosphere
Settlement Types: Underground ‘carousel’ complexes, processing and refinery domes
Umesh acts as the economic lifeblood of the system, containing vast underground veins of ores such as iron, copper, lead and palladium. Due to the planet's crushing surface pressure, unbreathable atmosphere, and scalding temperatures, the majority of its populace is relegated to a series of underground spinning habitats, which are designed to emulate normal rates of gravity for the human body. The few facilities that break the surface (most notably the planetary space elevator) are covered by void shields.
With the Santripaalian Cataclysm, Umesh finds itself in the unique position of being the largest loyalist political entity within the system – a far cry from the mere departmental division that it had been prior to the event. When Battlegroup Chiros was permitted to settle in at the Ackeron Belt, the administrative heads of the mining world were quick to offer the Navy a direct priority line to their raw and refined materials, in exchange for essential supplies to replenish their critically low stocks, as well as a promise that they remain in the system as a quarantine and police force in light of the breakdown of order.

Though it may not have had the exquisite amenities of a pleasure world, the martial prestige of a fortress world, or the raw industrial output of a forge world, Santripaal had nevertheless maintained a relatively comfortable existence within the Imperium. Its lands were fertile enough to ensure self-sufficiency, and the initial urban settlements that popped up with its colonisation soon spread across its five continents. Bi-annually, a number of their people were culled for their system’s tithe obligations, but otherwise, the world was at peace.
Yet one day, with barely any warning and no feasible cause, the lands and seas were engulfed in a cacophony of natural disasters. Earthquakes split the ground with cracks that stretched for as far as the eye could see. Tsunamis fell upon coastal settlements, wiping entire cities out of existence before racing inland. Tornadoes marked their presence with the trails of destruction they'd ripped and uprooted their way through. Wildfires rose from the smallest of sparks, leaving both urban and rural areas blackened and charred. It was the end of the world in all but name, and within 6 months, the old order of ways had ceased to be. Thus was this period of strife labelled the Cataclysm.
Despite what appeared to be nature’s best efforts to extinguish humanity from its lands, there did remain a significant number of survivors - traumatised and fearful survivors who rapidly became acutely aware of the scant resources that remained of their old lives, and thus the struggle to survive began. The Planetary Defence Force, once entrusted to maintain order and aid the populace in times of need, fractured into marauding warbands that clashed for the exclusive right to live.
Over time, these warbands found particular areas that suited their needs, and entrenched themselves into more permanent entities, slowly but surely rebuilding their infrastructure and clawing their return to a semblance of normalcy as they transformed back into a shadow of their predecessors. And yet, the fighting never stopped. The initial years of bloodshed had created too many wounds for the people of Santripaal to see each other as anything more than enemies. Warbands became militias, and militias became armies, until the planet descended into nearly two decades of civil war, continuing to butcher one even as the earth itself began to heal from the Cataclysm.
As of the present day, three major factions (the United Compact of Santripaal, the Tourmaline Enlightenment, and the Consortium Initiative) and at least a dozen minor ones have been identified, with every side claiming to be the true citizens of the Imperium, yet none with the vision to see the savage routine they have embroiled themselves in.

Classification: Naval Base (Asteroid Habitat)

Planetary Governance: Admiral Raphael Epraelus
Capital: The Penumbra of Annihilation (Exorcist-class Grand Cruiser)
Geography/Environment: Multiple hollowed-out asteroids that have been linked together to form a dockyard with supporting facilities
Settlement Types: Naval housing areas and docked naval vessels
Naval Base Ackeron is composed of over 450 asteroids of various diameters, which have been connected by docking tubes, and repurposed into a semi-permanent naval installation for Battlegroup Chiros, as its leadership deliberates on their next course of action.
The clear consensus is that Santripaal must be brought to heel so that they may resume their duty of fulfilling the Imperial Tithe. However, the question remains on which exact group they should support to achieve this without irreversibly incensing the other factions and causing an even further loss of life that would severely hamper the system's recovery rate. Also to consider are the Inquisition's presence in the system, and the unknown cause for the Cataclysm, which many an observer can’t help but feel are intrinsically linked.
There also exists an element of inter-service friction, as the Militarum complement that the Navy brought with them has become increasingly sidelined in the discussions, leading to widespread discontent.
As of now, Admiral Epraelus has settled with sending out regular patrols across the system, and conducting frequent orbital observations on Santripaal, though rumours say that he may be considering a more hands-on approach to the latter in the near future.

Geography/Environment: Majority-hydrogen atmosphere with metallic core, and a series of dense rings made up of small celestial objects
Settlement Types: Orbital habitats and monitoring stations
Although its virtually endless reserves of hydrogen, as well as its numerous potentially rich moons and asteroids make Nemarch a very attractive mining source, the denizens of Santripaal never elected to capitalise on such deposits beyond a few small refineries, in favour of focusing their industrial output on Umesh. This lack of interest or support unfortunately resulted in the gas giant's workers perishing long before Battlegroup Chiros arrived in light of the Cataclysm. Yet, instead of becoming derelict, the Navy found that the facilities had been overtaken and repurposed by a detachment of the Cult Mechanicus operating under the purview of the Inquisition.
Unsurprisingly, the Mechanicus were tight-lipped in elaborating on their presence here, and have since given the Navy the cold shoulder, which has done little to assuage the latter's trepidations surrounding the system.
